Season Nine of The Amazing Race premiered on February 28, 2006. After the poorly-received and low-rated Family Edition, The Amazing Race returns to form with eleven teams of two competing in a race around the world that started in Denver, Colorado and will reach five continents, traveling to new countries never before used as a destination in previous seasons of the race.

Recap

11 teams set out from Denver in a race for $1,000,000. Lake & Michelle didn't read the first clue correctly. But Lisa & Joni inadvertently grabbed the later flight without checking. In Sao Paolo, Eric & Jeremy and BJ & Tyler flew to the front of the pack. Then lifelong friends John & Scott got stuck in traffic and had trouble communicating with the locals. Eric & Jeremy cruised to first, and John & Scott became the first team to be eliminated.

Teams then took a bus to Brotas. Fran & Barry found the going rough at the Detour while Joseph & Monica excelled. But it was sisters Lisa & Joni who couldn't get into gear, and were the second team to be eliminated.

Teams then flew to Moscow where Wanda faces her fear of deep water, while daughter Desiree lended support. Teams grew frustrated with nesting dolls. Then teams took a flight to Frankfurt, Germany where Eric & Jeremy and BJ & Tyler surged ahead. Fran & Barry emerged from the back of the pack for the first time, then had trouble learning a traditional German dance. Wanda & Desiree got lost in the Autobahn highway and were eliminated.

In the next leg, Lake & Michelle suffered a ticketing error. In Italy, some teams had no problems assembling a Greek statue, but Lori floundered as Dave looked on. Lake & Michelle fought back by yielding Danielle & Dani which ultimately sealed their fate.

In the next leg, teams carried a 17 kg of fish. Monica had a meltdown. But Dave & Lori got stuck in a gridlock traffic and were eliminated.

Teams then flew to Greece where Eric & Jeremy beat Joseph & Monica for the Fast Forward. Three of the teams got off the train too early and took a bus to Isthimus. A harrowing Roadblock exhilarated Ray but terrified Fran. Lake & Michelle were in each other's throats. BJ & Tyler got some bad news. But they stayed positive. Suddenly Lake & Michelle had trouble finding the Pit Stop and couldn't catch up and were eliminated.

In the next leg, Ray & Yolanda go head-to-head. Eric & Jeremy had bad luck with an ill-tempered camel and navigational woes. But at the Roadblock, BJ struggled with the heat. Fran & Barry surprised everyone by becoming the oldest team to win a leg, and the hippies arrived last but were not eliminated.

BJ & Tyler started the next leg in last and got some money from some teams, but not from Joseph & Monica. Teams gloated on the first flight to Australia, but quickly changed their tune. At the detour, Joseph & Monica got in a tension. But Fran & Barry fell to last place when their taxi didn't appear at the docks and had an emotional farewell.

In the next leg, Eric & Jeremy pulled up a trick of their sleeves. When teams found out, they blamed Joseph & Monica, and the plan backfired on Eric & Jeremy. Keeping their word, BJ & Tyler yielded Joseph & Monica. At the Detour, Eric & Jeremy and BJ & Tyler chose a physical task, thinking it would be quick. But they soon found out that was not the case. Meanwhile, Ray & Yolanda chose a musical task, finished fast, and finally landed first. Joseph & Monica completed the same task as Ray & Yolanda and caught up with the other teams. And suddenly, it was a three-way footrace to the pit stop, and BJ made a tactical error and lost to Monica by three steps, but BJ & Tyler once again avoided elimination.

Teams then flew to Bangkok, Thailand. Joseph & Monica were misinformed by a local and missed the early bus to Lopberi. At the Roadblock, teams prepared a feast for sacred monkeys. But they had to deal with keeping them from eating it before it was finished. Ray & Yolanda and BJ & Tyler went for the Fast Forward. The task requires to eat crickets and grasshoppers. Ray & Yolanda seeing the amount of bugs left the task and left BJ & Tyler alone. BJ & Tyler finally finished the meal winning the Fast Forward and earned first place. While Eric & Jeremy and Ray & Yolanda excelled at the Detour, Joseph & Monica who took the more physical task broke down and were eliminated.

Teams then flew to Tokyo, Japan where Ray & Yolanda suffered navigational woes. At the Roadblock, Tyler tried to fool Jeremy while riding roller coasters. Ray & Yolanda couldn't catch up but were spared from elimination.

In the final leg of the race, Ray & Yolanda earned money from the other teams. In Alaska, teams drilled through the ice. BJ & Tyler had trouble finding snowshoes. Teams were equalized in the flight back to Denver. Ray & Yolanda had trouble finding the clue in a barn. At the Roadblock, Eric struggled sorting the flags in the correct order. BJ had less trouble and he & Tyler passed Eric & Jeremy and raced to finish line and became the official winners of The Amazing Race.
