Caprica is a dramatic science fiction program ordered by Syfy. It is a spinoff in the form of a prequel to the 2003 version of Battlestar Galactica, taking place over fifty years before the events of that program. The program will follow the lives of two families, the Graystones and the Adamas, alongside the development of the first Cylon. Much like Battlestar Galactica the prequel series uses its alternate world setting to offer a unique perspective on many real world social issues such as religion, terrorism and family structure.

A two-hour pilot movie was ordered in 2008 and was originally intended as a backdoor pilot but the network went ahead and ordered a full season in early 2009. Instead of premiering on television, the pilot was released on DVD and video download on April 21, 2009 and was also made available for free on Hulu and Syfy.com. The pilot premiered on TV on January 22, 2010 and the series proper is currently airing Fridays at 9PM on Syfy.
