History

In March 2011, Netflix announced their plans to begin acquiring original, first-run programming, in order to make it available through their online subscription service.

On February 6, 2012, Norwegian series Lilyhammer, starring American actor Steven Van Zandt, made its North American premiere through Netflix. Throughout 2013 it was followed by the world premieres of Netflix first original series: Political drama House of Cards, horror drama Hemlock Grove, a new season of FOX's 2003-2006 sitcom Arrested Development, and dramedy Orange Is the New Black. Additionally, UK's Derek, by Ricky Gervais, had it US premiere exclusively on Netflix.

In 2014 Netflix is due to premiere a fourth and final season of The Killing, and in 2015, following a deal with Marvel Comics, live action superhero series Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, Luke Cage, and The Defenders, will all premiere. Sense8 will premiere on June 5, 2015.
