Disney Television Animation is the animated television production studio of The Walt Disney Company. It was formed in 1984 as Walt Disney Pictures Television Animation Group, and went by the name Walt Disney Television Animation from 1987-2011.
As of 2014 it produces all animated shows airing on Disney Channel and several animated shows on Disney XD and Disney Junior.
History
Ironically, Walt Disney refused to do original animation made for television because he knew it was economically impossible to produce animated theatrical-quality material in television programs on the constraints of time and budget allowances, so all pre-1985 TV animation projects were wrap-around segments made in order to bridge the gaps together on the existing theatrical material. It was not until 1985 that the studio finally relented and they successfully gambled with substantially higher budgeted productions which proved profitable ventures that raised the standard for the TV medium.
In 1987 the studio had its first success with DuckTales, leading the way into the 1990s where the two hour syndicated program block The Disney Afternoon introduced shows like Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers, Darkwing Duck, Aladdin and Timon and Pumbaa.
Following the cancellation of The Disney Afternoon in 1997, the main vehicle for the studios new productions became Disney's One Saturday Morning on ABC, with some shows also airing at its spinoff UPN block Disney's One Too (established 1999), which aired booth weekday afternoons and Sunday mornings.
In 2002 Disney effectively changed their business strategy to exclusively premiere new shows and episodes on its own cable channels: Disney Channel, Disney XD and Disney Junior.
Although it originally functioned as a department within Walt Disney Television for nearly two decades, it has operated separately since 2003, when Walt Disney Television ceased operations.
