UPN was a national broadcast network in the USA. The acronym stands for United Paramount Network. It was founded in 1995.
On January 24, 2006, CBS and Warner Bros. Entertainment announced their intention to shut down their networks and combine them into a single joint-venture entitled The CW. UPN was officially shut down on September 15, 2006 to coincide with the start-date of the 2006–2007 season on the new network. In several markets, UPN programming was pre-empted due to the earlier start date of MyNetworkTV, which was established to take the place of UPN stations in which a CW affiliate already existed.
