Season Six of Buffy the Vampire Slayer was the first season of the show to be aired on UPN after the network outbid The WB for the show. This is also the season where the show decided to get much darker and more human, its main storylines straying away from the supernatural.
This season starts off three months after Buffy's death in "The Gift". The Buffybot serves as the replacement to Buffy as Willow works and tinkers with it every single day to ensure that the essence of Buffy never dies. However, unbeknownst to Dawn and Giles, the rest of the Scooby Gang have been hard at work figuring out the perfect time to revive Buffy. This season deals with the aftermath of Buffy's death and eventual resurrection, as well as Willow's continuing bid for power and Xander and Anya's quickly collapsing relationship.
The supernatural aspect of the show once again takes a backseat in this season in favor of the character's lives and how growing older is affecting them all in different ways. Many of the episodes in this season have a focus grounded in reality, including acquiring jobs, paying bills, loving another person, and attempting to gain more influence in society.
The theme that is explored throughout this whole season is reality. As the façade of youth and the supernatural disappears, the characters have to deal with the real world and how they're going to go about continuing to live in it.
