Season Five (2000–2001) of Buffy the Vampire Slayer is the final season of the show that aired on The WB. In this season, the series faces major changes as new characters are introduced and old ones say their goodbyes. This season is a stark contrast to the fourth season, as the Big Bad is revealed right away, after criticisms of Adam's uselessness in the previous season. We see Buffy trying to figure out more about her role as a slayer, fighting to understand what it means to be a slayer and why she was presented with this huge burden in her life.

The theme that is explored throughout this whole season is family, including what actually constitutes a family, and who is able to be a part of one.
