From The TV IV

Season Two of Buffy the Vampire Slayer premiered on September 15, 1997. The WB ordered a full 22 episode season which allowed the writers to develop a slower burning storyline. Along with the episode increase, the series was given a larger budget to build full sets like more of the school and the villain hide-outs.

The season introduced several characters that would go on to figure heavily into the Buffy mythos, including big bads Spike and Drusilla. The two are tied to Angel's past, which was also fleshed out significantly over the course of the season.A love interest for Willow, Oz, was also introduced and quickly added to the core group.

In addition to the betrayal themed season-long story, many of the stand-alone episodes established the Buffy versions of famous horror characters like werewolves, the Creature from the Black Lagoon, Frankenstein's monster and the mummy. Including vampires, all of the Universal movie monsters appear in some form in this season.
