Plot Overview

The Island/Freighter

  • On the freighter, Keamy asks Frank Lapidus if he's ready and reminds him to not be late. Frank heads inside and finds Regina guarding the door to the sick bay, where Sayid and Desmond are behind held. He's brought food for the two men at the captain's request, and points out to Regina that she's reading her book upside down. Sayid believes they're being held captive because of Minkowski's death and that Frank helped them get out of the sick bay, but Frank denies having freed them. Frank lets them know they haven't been able to contact the island as something must have happened to their satellite phone and then drops off some canned food as they've had a problem with their kitchen.

The following morning, Sayid and Desmond are slipped a note through the sick bay door. The note reads, "Don't trust the captain." Sayid tells Desmond that Ben claimed to have a spy on the freighter. Later, the two hear a banging noise reverberating through the hull of the ship. The sound is annoying Desmond, but Sayid believes it isn't mechanical, rather someone is banging pipes together over and over. Ray frees the two from the sick bay and brings them out on deck as the captain wants to see them. On deck, Sayid realizes the helicopter is missing and is told Frank is running an errand. Desmond notices Regina up on an upper deck, wrapped in heavy chains and walking in a dazed state. She jumps overboard. Desmond and Sayid yell for help and for a rope to throw over, but the crew on deck are unresponsive and the captain orders them to get back to work. Captain Gault introduces himself to the two and tells them he didn't do anything about Regina because he didn't want to lose anymore people. Some of his crew have been experiencing a heightened sense of cabin fever and he believes it has something to do with their close proximity to the island. They can't move away as there is a saboteur on board who has disabled the engines. He's under orders from Charles Widmore to move away to a safe distance once the engines are back up. Gault takes the two into his cabin and shows them a flight data recorder. Charles Widmore expended a large amount of resources to obtain the black box, which was recovered from the wreckage of Oceanic Flight 815. Despite all 324 passengers being found inside the wreckage, Gault points out how the survivors are on the island and so someone with incredibly resources staged a fake wreckage site with 324 dead bodies inside. That is why he wants Benjamin Linus.

With night falling upon the freighter, Ray escorts Sayid and Desmond below to their cabin. He asks the two for their opinion on the captain, and then tells them the captain tells them how it is but they shouldn't piss him off. Opening the door to the cabin, cockroaches scatter away from the light and a large blood spatter is visible on the hull. Ray tells them that the blood shouldn't still be there. He notices Johnson is mopping on the other end of the corridor and tells him to come clean it up. Johnson reluctantly comes over, revealing that he's actually Michael Dawson. Ray introduces Kevin Johnson to Sayid and Desmond.

  • At night at the beach camp, Sun is worried about how Sayid and Desmond left for the freighter three days ago and haven't returned. Jin suggests they'll return with the ship, but would rather talk about more important things such as a name for their baby. If it's a girl, then he would like the name "Ji Yeon".

In the morning, Sun rouses Jin awake as Kate and Jack have returned. Kate tells them that Charlotte knocked her unconscious when she came across them, probably because she didn't want to explain why she and Daniel were heading to a poison gas factory to deactivate it. Juliet lied to Jack about the station, and Kate suggests it was force of habit for her. Sun wonders if the freighter people are really there to rescue them, and Kate expresses her doubt in their motives. Sun confronts Daniel and is told that rescuing them isn't up to him. With her doubts confirmed by Daniel's attitude, Sun tells Jin they're heading to Locke's camp at the barracks.

In preparation for their stay at the barracks, Sun rifles through Juliet's tent for vitamins but is caught in the act by Juliet. She tries to make up an excuse, but Juliet knows Sun is planning on leaving and warns her that she can't stay on the island. Sun no longer trusts her seeing as how she lied to Jack about the station and points out how Claire and her child are fine. Kate provides directions to the barracks for Sun and Jin, but she's stopped by Juliet. As Sun refuses to listen to her, Juliet tries to warn Jin about how Sun is sick and must leave the island in three weeks or she'll die. Jin decides he'll go wherever Sun goes. Sun again refuses to listen to Juliet's pleas, so Juliet tells Jin that Sun had an affair and thought the baby could be his. Sun slaps Juliet and Jin realizes Juliet must have been telling the truth. He leaves and, at their shelter, readies some fishing gear as Sun tries to get him to listen to her. Bernard walks right into the middle of the mess, asking Jin if he can tag along, but realizes that something is wrong between the two. However, Jin asks Bernard to come with him and the two leave.

The two fish in the outrigger canoe and Bernard tells Jin that they're the only two married men on the island. Marriage is wonderful, but it isn't easy as making decisions takes twice as long. He reveals to Jin that Rose has cancer, but she believes the island has cured her of it. Despite that fact, she didn't want to go with Locke as it was the right thing to do; Locke is a murderer. At the beach, Juliet apologizes to Sun but tells her she needs to get off the island with everyone else. She warns Sun that, should she stay on the island, she'll begin to experience a constant state of nausea in three weeks, then a week later experience shortness of breath that won't go away, then a week later lose consciousness and slip into a coma, then she'll die with her baby.

At night, Jin returns with his catch, cooked as meal for himself and Sun. Jin tells her he doesn't need an explanation as she had an affair because of the man he used to be. He forgives Sun for what she did and will go with her to Locke's camp. Sun tells him she doesn't want to go anymore as she now believes Juliet. Jin promises to do whatever it takes to protect her and the baby, but asks if the baby is his. Sun confirms that it's his baby.

The Flashforward/Flashback

  • Flashforward: Sun
In South Korea, Sun is packing a bag and getting ready to go out when she feels a sharp pain. She calls emergency services for an ambulance, telling the operator that she's pregnant and believes something is wrong.

Sun is pushed into the hospital in a wheelchair and a nurse confirms to another nurse that Sun is one of the Oceanic Six. With Sun on a bed, the nurse begins to remove Sun's jewelry because of swelling but Sun refuses to have her wedding ring removed. Dr. Bae greets Sun, informing her that her regular doctor is away at a conference, and has medicine administered to her for the pain. Checking Sun's body, he concludes the baby is in distress and will try to find out why. Asked if he should contact anyone, Sun tells him to contact her husband Jin.

Sun begins to go into labor. Dr. Bae has to perform a C-section as the medication he gave will make a natural birth more difficult, but Sun refuses as Jin isn't there yet. The baby begins to crown and the doctor has Sun start pushing. Sun gives birth to a baby daughter.

Out of the hospital, Sun retrieves the wedding ring that was removed from her finger for the delivery. The doorbell rings and Sun greets the visitor, Hurley. The two hug and Hurley learns no one else is coming. Sun shows Hurley her daughter and Hurley remarks how much she looks like Jin. The three leave to see Jin and arrive at a cemetery. Kneeling at the grave marker, Sun tells Jin that he was right and their baby is a girl. The delivery was hard on her as the doctor said she called out for his name. She's named their daughter Ji Yeon, just like he wanted.

  • Flashback: Jin
In South Korea, Jin heads into a toy store and tells the shopkeeper he's looking for a panda. The shopkeeper pulls one out from the back of a shelf and asks if he would like it gift wrapped. Jin declines, telling the shopkeeper he has to head over to the maternity ward of the hospital immediately. He receives a phone call and tells the caller he's heading to the hospital immediately.

Outside the shop, Jin hails a taxi and places the panda inside. He receives another call, but a man bumps into him and he drops the phone and it's run over by a man on a scooter. Jin retrieves the phone, but another man gets into the taxi and it speeds away with the panda still in the backseat. Jin tries to chase after the taxi, but to no avail and slams the broken cellphone to the ground. Heading back inside the toy store, Jin tries to get another panda but is told that was the last one. Another panda is behind the shopkeeper, but it's already been paid for and is being held for pick up. Jin slams a large amount of money onto the counter and demands the panda. The shopkeeper relents.

Jin rushes into the hospital with the panda and arrives at a guarded door. He introduces himself to the Chinese security agent as a representative of Paik Automative and has come to present a gift. Before the guard heads inside the room to check with the Chinese Ambassador, Jin learns from him that the child is a boy and then wraps the panda in a blue ribbon. The ambassador steps outside to meet with Jin. Jin presents the panda as a symbol of Mr. Paik's eagerness to do business in China. The ambassador accepts the gift and congratulations from Mr. Paik and tells Jin that he'll give Mr. Paik a call. A nurse notices Jin is leaving so soon and Jin tells her the baby isn't his, that he's only been married for two months.

Trivia

The Show

  • Exposé: In Sun's flashforward, she is seen turning off her television. The program airing on the television is Exposé and the episode is the one in which Nikki's character is killed, as seen in "Exposé".
  • Year of the Dragon: The toy store shopkeeper offers Jin a stuffed dragon as it's the Year of the Dragon. The most recent Year of the Dragon was in 2000, making that the year of Jin's flashback.
  • Dates: Jin's grave marker shows he was born on November 27, 1974 and died on September 22, 2004. September 22, 2004 is the premiere date of "Pilot, Part 1" and the date on which Oceanic flight 815 crashed.
  • Firsts: This is the first episode to contain both a flashback and a flashforward.

Behind the Scenes

  • DUI Curse: Daniel Dae Kim is the latest to fall victim to what TMZ.com has called the "Lost DUI Curse." In December 2005, Michelle Rodriguez and Cynthia Watros were arrested for DUI and, shortly after, both were killed off and dropped from the series. In September 2006, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje was arrested and accused of disobeying a police officer and driving without a license. The charges were dropped, but Eko was also killed off soon after the incident (although there is reportedly no correlation between the two). Dae Kim was arrested in October 2007 for DUI and, in this episode, it was revealed in a flashforward that his character has died.
  • Missing in Action: Michael Emerson, Josh Holloway, Ken Leung, Terry O'Quinn and Emilie de Ravin are credited but do not appear in this episode.

Allusions and References

  • The Survivors of the Chancellor: Regina is seen reading The Survivors of the Chancellor, an 1875 novel written by Jules Verne. The novel is about the final voyage of the British sailing vessel Chancellor and told from the perspective of one of its passengers. Of 28 people aboard the vessel, only 11 remain alive by the end of the novel. Those who die perish through accidents or by committing suicide.
  • Captain Gault: The captain of the freighter is named Gault. Captain Gault is a fictional sea captain created by English writer William Hope Hodgson. The name may also be a reference to John Galt, a character in Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged. In the novel Galt is an engineer who develops a revolutionary engine. However, Galt becomes disgusted by the forced collectivization at his work place and goes on strike, preventing the world from using his engine. He then begins to persuade other people of talent to go on strike, prevent the world from leeching off their hard work, and join him at his secret hiding place.
