Trivia

The Show

  • ARG Commercial: During a commercial break in Part 3 of the episode, an advertisement for Octagon Global Recruiting was broadcast, sponsored by ABC. The company is advertising a recruitment drive between July 24 and 27 in San Diego, which coincides with the San Diego ComicCon. A website URL, OctogonGlobalRecruiting.com, was shown on screen during the commercial.

Behind the Scenes

  • Alternate Endings: In addition to the televised ending with Locke in the coffin, two more possible endings were shot, likely as misinformation so that the true ending would not be leaked. These endings were broadcast the morning after season finale on Good Morning America, one showing Sawyer in the coffin and the other showing Desmond.
  • Covert Filming: The scenes with Alan Dale in London were actually shot in London. At the time, Dale was appearing as King Arthur in a West End production of Spamalot. In order to keep the finale under wraps, the scenes were shot in secret. Dale did not know the plot of the episode and said that "the wording, the title and all the headings on the scripts were changed. Only [he] knew they were the Lost scripts, along with the director." This was also done for the scenes with Ben and Charles Widmore in The Shape of Things to Come. They are, as of the end of the fourth season, the only scenes to be shot outside of the United States.

Allusions and References

  • Gouge Away: The song that Jack listens to on the way to the funeral parlor is "Gouge Away" by the Pixies. It is the 15th song on the band's debut album Doolittle, released in 1989. The song itself is fashioned after the biblical story of Samson and Delilah, in which Samson—a Herculian figure whose superhuman power is connected to the length of his hair—is betrayed by Delilah, who shaves his head and hands him, now powerless, over to his enemies. They gouge out Samson's eyes, hence the title, and chain him to two pillars. However, Samson's hair regrows and, with a modicum of his power returned, he pulls down the pillars and kills both himself and his captors by collapsing the stronghold.
  • Jeremy Bentham: The alias that Locke uses is another reference to a well-known philosopher. Jeremy Bentham was an advocate of utilitarianism, a philosophy which is often simplified to "the greatest good for the greatest number." Bentham was a progressive thinker and also supported animal rights, equal rights to women and abolishing slavery. Posthumously, he is perhaps best known for an unusual request in his will which asked that his corpse be preserved and stored in a wooden cabinet (the "auto-icon"). This request was honored and the auto-icon has been on public display at University College London since 1850.
