Heroes is an action-oriented drama series broadcast on NBC. The series, created by Tim Kring follows the lives of several people with extraordinary powers and the regular humans who come into contact with them. The title of the series is a play off of "superheroes" and uses many American comic book superhero conventions to tell an overarching storyline that's built up by several other stories building to a head.
In a typical episode, the subplots featuring several different main characters in varying locations on the planet are given time, often working towards a common goal whether they know it or not. Many episodes begin with a narrated voice over by Mohinder Suresh, one of the few non-powered main characters, and end on a cliffhanger for each character.
The series premiered in the Fall 2006 season and immediately broke away as a hit on its first episode. The series' pilot episode was the night's most watched program among adults aged 18–49, with a total of 14.3 million viewers. Heroes received the highest rating for any NBC drama premiere in five years and was quickly picked up for a full season. When the rest of the series proved popular, it was greenlit for a second season and a spin-off entitled Heroes: Origins, which features new characters in short stories written or directed by high profile filmmakers. However, the second season didn't receive nearly as high ratings. This combined with the WGA Strike caused the spin-off to be shelved.
To capitalize off of the comic book connection, Heroes is also told in a series of weekly online comics which fill in back story for characters in the series, including characters that haven't been shown on the television series yet.
