Channel 5 (known on-air as Five from 2002 to 2011) is the most recent terrestrial television network launched in the United Kingdom. Originally slated as the majority of UK residents were unable to receive clear transmissions, leading to it being dubbed the "Snow Channel". Launched on March 30, 1997, the first people to appear on it were the Spice Girls, who did a five-minute song about the channel. The network was renamed from Channel 5 to Five in 2002, then returned to its original name in 2011.

Channel 5 have found more success in movies and imported international programs (mainly from the United States) than with their own output. Their original soap opera Family Affairs ran from the launch night to December 30, 2005 when Channel 5 decided that the show's low ratings and high production costs were too much for the network to bear. Channel 5 have promised to spend Family Affairs' £13m budget on more original British programming in the near future.

The network's news output, 5 News, was produced by ITN until the end of 2004 when Sky News took up the contract.
