Five is the most recent terrestial channel launched in the UK. Originally slated as the majority of UK residents where unable to receive clear transmissions leading to it being dubbed the "Snow Channel". Launched 30th March 1997, the first people to appear on it where the Spice Girls, who did a five minute song about the channel. The channel was renamed from Channel 5 to Five in 2002.
Five have found more success in movies and international programs than with their own output. Their original soap opera Family Affairs ran from the launch night to December 30, 2005 when Five decided that the show's low ratings and high production costs were too much for the channel to bear. Five have promised to spend Family Affairs' £13m budget on more original British programming in the near future.
The channel's news output, Five News, was produced by ITN until the end of 2004 when Sky News took up the contract.
