NCIS (2003-), formerly Navy NCIS, a spinoff of Donald Bellisario's long-running military drama JAG, comes at the legal workings of the Navy and Marine Corps from a different angle than its predecessor: while JAG deals with the actual legal proceedings, NCIS deals with the Navy's investigative branch, showing a team of agents led by Special Agent Gibbs (Mark Harmon) solving crimes committed against or by people connected to the Navy and Marine Corps.
The field team was originally composed of Special Agent Gibbs, Special Agent Caitlin Todd (a former Secret Service Presidential Detail agent) and Special Agent Anthony DiNozzo, a former police detective. At the beginning of the second season, Special Agent Timothy McGee, a computer specialist, was added to the field team. Two other primary characters appear as needed, those being Dr. Donald "Ducky" Mallard, NCIS's medical examiner, and Abby Sciuto, a forensics scientist. Special Agent Todd (Sasha Alexander) left the show at the end of season two and was replaced by Mossad agent Ziva David (Cote de Pablo).
