Law & Order: Criminal Intent (2001—) was the third series to spin off from Law & Order, expanding the universe into the realm of the Major Case Squad, a section of the police who investigate high profile cases. These cases, unlike SVU, range from burglary to homicide and everything in between, rather than majorly focusing on one section of crime.
The series sets itself apart from its predecessors by focusing primarily on the victims and suspects, rather than the detectives and prosecution. Every episode opens with a short teaser of the episode which pieces together small clips of the lives of these related parties and often includes clues to the mystery at hand. Criminal Intent is characterized by its extremely sophisticated, complex plot lines and is meant as a counterweight to SVU's typically sensationalist, brutal stories.
