WSTR-TV signed on for the first time in in January of 1980 with the call letters WBTI. It was owned by Buford Television. The station ran cartoons from 6-9am, religious programming from 9am to noon, a movie from noon to 2pm, cartoons for the rest of the afternoon, and subscription television service (ON TV) in the evening. In late 1982, the station began to run ON TV from noon to 3pm, in addition to the evenings. The station began to run ON TV full time in 1983, except for the religious programming which remained at the same time slot.
In November of 1984, the station was sold to United Cable. The TV Schedule remained the same. The call letters were changed to WIII with the slogan, "The eyes of Cincinnati". The station dropped ON TV completely in June of that year, and began to air cartoons, classic sitcoms, old movies, religious programming, and drama.
In 1987 the station was sold to Abry, who changed the call letters to WSTR and banded itself STAR 64. In January of 1995, the station became a UPN affiliate and rebranded itself as UPN 64. The Sinclair Broadcast Group acquired Abry in 1996, and became the owner of WSTR-TV. WSTR-TV switched affiliations with WBQC-CA in 1998, becoming a WB affiliate.
On February 24, 2006 citing that its Ten O'Clock News program was losing viewers rapidly WSTR-TV partnered with WKRC-TV. WKRC's news program would air at Ten O'Clock on WSTR-TV and at Eleven O'Clock on WKRC-TV. In September of 2006 WB and UPN merged to form the CW. However, instead of becoming a CW affiliate WSTR-TV decided to become a MyNetworkTV affiliate and WBQC-CA decided to become independent. In response WKRC-TV created a new digital sub-channel to accommodate the CW known as the CinCW. WSTR-TV is still a MyNetworkTV affiliate today.
There is a WSTR radio ("Star 94"), broadcasting at 94.1 FM from Atlanta, Georgia as a Top 40 station.
