History
On June 1, 1960, the New Zealand Broadcasting Service television service was launched as its first station, AKTV2, started broadcasting in Auckland from the NZBC building at 74 Shortland Street. NZBS, which became the New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation in 1962, initially broadcast for two hours a day, two days a week. Christchurch's CHTV3 followed in June 1961, Wellington's WNTV1 a month later, and Dunedin's DNTV2 on July 31, 1962.
Television advertising began in April 1961 and were initially allowed only on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. By 1965, television was broadcasting seven nights a week.
On April 1, 1975, the NZBC was split into three separate state-owned corporations: Television One, Television Two (TV2) and Radio New Zealand.
In 1976 TV2 was renamed South Pacific Television.
In 1980 the two television channels merged to form Television New Zealand, with the purpose of finally providing a dividend to the Government. South Pacific Television reverted to its original name of TV2.
In 1988 the Labour-led government dissolved BCNZ, deregulated the broadcasting market and moved away from complementary programming and repositioned TV2 as an entertainment channel, leaving more serious programming to TV One. On November 26, 1989, the state monopoly on television finally ended as privately-owned TV3 (now known as Three under the ownership of MediaWorks) was launched as a commercial competitor to TVNZ.
On November 29, 1991, TV2 introduced 24-hour television overnight on Fridays and Saturdays, eventually becoming 24/7 on October 19, 1994.
On September 22, 2007, the channels switched from letterbox to anamorphic widescreen.
In August 2008, TV One, along with TV2, began 720p high definition terrestrial broadcasts, which became available on Sky pay TV satellite starting in June 2009. The HDTV signals were then switched to 1080i from August 2010.
