Supernatural is known for its frequent use of classic rock music and classic metal songs. This sets it apart from most other shows on The WB and The CW that tend to use more contemporary alternative rock. The show also makes frequent references to classic rockers and rock bands. The main characters often using rocker names as aliases. This list is an attempt to compile the names of all the non-original music and all the musical references in one place.

Note many of these songs are production music produced for the express purpose of licensing to TV and film productions and as such may be dificult to find.

A lot of the information used to update this page came from a thread on The CW's Lounge message board if you have questions about the list go there to ask them.

The version of the pilot released to reviewers and advertisers and eventually leaked to the internet had different music than the aired version. This is common as music clearances for broadcast are not done until after a series is ordered. In addition some of the music used was dramatically different than the usual music on the show.

Sam and Dean's discussion on Bon Jovi was a callback to episode 2x14 - Born Under a Bad Sign in which Dean makes fun of Sam for liking Bon Jovi.
Dean's ID says his name is Mr. Hagar. Sammy Hagar was the replacement lead vocalist for Van Halen after David Lee Roth left the band.
The episode title is the title of several rock and metal albums and songs most famously a 1988 album by Ozzy Osbourne.

The sheriff proclaims "Hell's Bells" as he exits his office. Hell's Bells is an old fashioned euphemism often used in place of profanity. It is also the title of one of AC/DC's best known songs which was played during the season 3 premiere recap.

Dean says his two favorite songs are "Ramble On" and "Traveling Riverside Blues" both were recorded by Led Zeppelin but only the first was written by them. The second was originally recorded by Robert Johnson but Dean is likely talking about the Zeppelin version given his affinity for the band.

"Sympathy for the Devil" is a song by the Rolling Stones which is sung from Lucifer's perspective and is an attempt to get some sympathy but in a completely unapologetic tone and by saying he is no different than humanity which is basically the complete opposite of the speech in the episode.
