- Jensen Ackles was originally cast as Sam Winchester but had learned both character's lines for his screen test. After Jared Padalecki was instead chosen to play the younger Winchester brother, Jensen was asked to play Dean. Jensen actually preferred the character of Dean because he got to be a "smart-ass".
