- Jared Padalecki was approached for the role of Sam because creator Eric Kripke's wife was a big fan of Gilmore Girls, a drama on which Padalecki played Rory's first boyfriend, Dean Forester.
- Jared Padalecki cites Sam Winchester as his favorite character to play so far. He says before being cast in the role he was typically asked to play the "boy-next-door" and says he enjoys playing someone "more analytical" and intelligent.
