Plot Overview

The Island

  • Day 1
The tail section of Oceanic flight 815 crashes just off the coast of the island, raining wreckage into the ocean, onto the beach and jungle. Ana-Lucia wakes up underwater and swims ashore, helping Eko pull survivors out of the water. Zack, a young boy Eko is helping, yells for his sister Emma, who is floating face-down in the water. Eko brings her to the beach and Ana-Lucia is able to revive her. Eko asks Cindy to look after Zach and Emma, and he goes into the water to bring the dead bodies ashore. Libby sets the leg of an injured survivor, Donald, telling Ana-Lucia that she had a year of medical school before dropping out and becoming a clinical psychologist. A man, Goodwin, appears out of the jungle yelling for help and brings Ana-Lucia into the jungle where Bernard is still strapped to an airline seat perched up in a tree. Ana-Lucia is able to talk Bernard into unbuckling his seatbelt and grabbing a nearby branch before the entire seat crashes to the jungle floor.
That night, as the survivors sleep on the beach by a camp fire, the group is woken by unknown noises. Ana-Lucia and Goodwin investigate and discover a bloodied Eko with a large rock over two dead bodies.
  • Day 2
Examining the bodies, Ana-Lucia discovers they have no wallets, no cell phones, no keys, no shoes, no labels on their clothes, nothing. A man, Nathan, tells the survivors that three of their group are missing. Ana-Lucia suggests they all leave the beach to find a safer place, but Nathan nixes the idea as they've got kids and people who are seriously injured, and they need to keep the signal fire burning. Goodwin agrees with Nathan, and Cindy tells the group that the rescue teams don't know where to look for them as they were heading in the wrong direction when they lost communication.
  • Day 3
Libby tells Ana-Lucia that the infection in Donald's leg is getting worse. If he dies, then he'll be the fourth survivor to die.
  • Day 5
Donald's body is buried by the beach, among at least eight other graves.
  • Day 7
The survivors are able to catch a chicken. Eko keeps to himself, etching words onto his club. Libby brings some chicken for him and tries to let him know that it wasn't his fault and he was only defending himself.
  • Day 12
At night on the beach, the survivors are attacked again - taking nine of them, including the kids. Ana-Lucia hits one of the attackers in the head with a rock and tries to interrorgate her, but Goodwin tells Ana-Lucia that she's dead. Ana-Lucia searches the body and finds a knife and a list - a list of nine of the survivor's names. Eko returns from the jungle, unable to find any trace of the Others or the people they kidnapped. Nathan suggests they got their names from the people they already took, but Ana-Lucia tells him nobody knew anyone's names the first night. Ana-Lucia asks where Nathan was when he disappeared for two hours the other day, but Goodwin tells Ana-Lucia to calm down and not get paranoid. Libby tells the group they need to leave the beach and Goodwin agrees.
  • Day 15
The survivors arrive at a stream in the jungle. Ana-Lucia tells the group they have five minutes to rest, but Nathan disagrees with her and decides to stay right there. Ana-Lucia concedes.
  • Day 17
Using improvised tools, Ana-Lucia begins digging out a pit. Libby stops by and tells Ana-Lucia that Nathan creeps her out, asking Ana-Lucia if she really thinks Nathan could be one of "them." Ana-Lucia tells her that's why she's digging the hole.
  • Day 19
As Nathan and Bernard are setting up a trap to catch rabbits, Ana-Lucia knocks Nathan out and throws him in the pit. Ana-Lucia tells them he wasn't on the plane and Cindy agrees, telling them she didn't see him once on the plane. Goodwin, Bernard and Eko all express doubt about their claims of Nathan not being on the plane. That night, Ana-Lucia interrogates Nathan about where the kids are, but doesn't get anything out of him.
  • Day 23
While interrogating Nathan again, Ana-Lucia discovers that someone has been secretly giving food to Nathan - that someone being Eko. Alone with Ana-Lucia, Goodwin tells her they should let Nathan go, that they are not savages. Ana-Lucia tells him that, if they were savages, then she would have already cut off his finger - and she's doing that tomorrow.
At night, Goodwin opens the pit and helps Nathan out. He tells Nathan that he believes Ana-Lucia is going to hurt him and that he needs to leave immediately. Goodwin points out that the beach is about five miles away, but as Nathan leaves his neck is broken by Goodwin.
  • Day 24
Cindy runs to the survivor's camp with news that Nathan has vanished. Ana-Lucia tells the group that they've been found and need to move on.
  • Day 26
The group exits the jungle and arrive at the ocean.
  • Day 27
In the jungle, the group discovers a door obscured by hanging vegetation and underbrush. Eko opens the door, revealing the world "QUARANTINE" stenciled onto the inside of the door. The group explores the inside and discover it's a bunker - the Arrow. Goodwin suggests it might be a storage facility, and Ana-Lucia discovers a control panel and is able to turn on the bunker's lights. The group find a storage container with some blankets, a Bible, a glass eye, and a two-way radio inside.
Outside of the Arrow, Bernard tries to use the radio but gets nothing. Goodwin grabs the radio and explains that the hills are blocking the signal. He volunteers to go to higher ground, but Ana-Lucia tells him she'll go with him. As they hike, Ana-Lucia questions Goodwin about why the Others are attacking them; why they took some of them and not the others. Goodwin tells her that, on the first night, they took the strongest — failing to get Eko - who are all athletic, tough, threats. Ana-Lucia points out that they didn't take him. The two take a break, and Ana-Lucia points out that, on the knife she took from one of the dead Others, it's a U.S. Army knife that is probably 20 years old. She then asks Goodwin if Bernard saw him in the jungle, if that is why he pretended to be one of the survivors, since he ran out of the jungle ten minutes after the crash and wasn't wet. Goodwin tells her that if she cut off Nathan's finger and he still told her he was on the plane, then maybe she would have started to believe she had the wrong guy - Nathan was not a good person and that is why he wasn't on the list. Asking about the children, Goodwin tells Ana-Lucia that they children are fine and are better off now. Ana-Lucia attacks Goodwin and the two tumble down a hill, and Ana-Lucia impales Goodwin on a wooden spear.
  • Day 41
Bernard tries the two-way radio again and receives a mayday - Boone. Bernard tries to talk to him, but Ana-Lucia takes the radio and turns it off, telling them that it's the Others who are trying to draw them out of hiding. Bernard refuses to accept this, but Ana-Lucia tells him there are no other survivors of the Oceanic crash.
Alone by a steam, Ana-Lucia cries to herself. Eko appears and tells her it's going to be okay. She asks him why he's talking now and Eko tells her it's because it's been 40 days. Asking why he waited 40 days to talk, Eko replies that she waited 40 days to cry.
  • Day 45
On a beach, Libby and Cindy are trying to catch fish with a net. Cindy spots Jin's body and they pull him onto the beach. Later, in the jungle, Jin is tied to a tree and Eko removes his blindfold. Ana-Lucia seems to think he's a threat, while Bernard and Cindy disagree with her. As they argue, Jin is able to break free and runs to the beach and finds Michael and Sawyer. Eko rushes the trio, knocks them out, and they're thrown into the pit. Ana-Lucia tells Eko to hit her and throw her into the pit to find out if they're okay, since Eko believes they aren't the Others.
  • Day 46/47/48
Events from Orientation, Everybody Hates Hugo, and Abandoned.
  • Day 48
The group discovers that Cindy is missing. They move on in the rain and are surrounded by whispering. Shannon appears out of the foliage and is shot in the abdomen by Ana-Lucia. Sayid holds Shannon's dead body in his arms and looks up at Ana-Lucia.

  • What was the purpose of the Arrow?

Answers

  • Bernard was the individual who responded to Boone's mayday. (1x19 - Deus Ex Machina)
  • Goodwin was an Other and was killed by Ana-Lucia. (2x05 - ...and Found)
  • The Others kidnapped the twelve tail section survivors at night — three the first night and nine more about eleven days later. (2x06 - Abandoned)

The Cursed Numbers

  • There were originally 23 survivors from the tail section.
  • On the first night, three survivors were taken by the Others. Eko was to be the fourth, but killed his attackers. When the Others next came, they took nine more survivors. If the ninth survivor taken was to make up for not taking Eko, then the Others wanted to take four survivors the first night and eight survivors on the second attempt, both of which are cursed numbers.
