Plot Overview
The Island
- On the beach, Claire tries to comfort Sun about Jin's fate on the raft, but Sun discovers her wedding ring has gone missing. She searches for it through her belongings and Jack takes notice. He tells Sun that he once lost his wedding ring and searched everywhere for it, but eventually went to a jeweler and had a replica made. Sun notices he has no wedding ring on and Jack tells her that it's rattling around his sock drawer at home. After turning down Jack's offer to help, Sun runs into Hurley who believes that Vincent may have ate her wedding ring. The two wait by Vincent for the ring to appear, but Sun tells Hurley that it's ridiculous and the dog didn't eat her ring. At her garden, Sun's emotions overcome her and she begins tearing apart the garden. Locke appears and tells her he sometimes wishes he had a garden to tear apart, that he used to get angry and frustrated all the time. Asking why he's not frustrated anymore, Locke tells her he's no longer lost — he stopped looking. Later on the beach, Kate finds Sun staring at the ocean and tells her that the group on the raft have only been gone for a few days. But Sun tells her Jin's not alright, that Claire found the bottle of messages. Kate asks her where the bottle is and Sun tells her she buried it. She takes Kate to where she buried the bottle and digs it back up. Kate points out Sun's wedding ring in the sand where the bottle was buried.
- At the Arrow, Ana-Lucia approaches Michael, Jin, and Sawyer to tell them they're going to help gather food and water as they all are going to walk across the island to the mid-section camp. Eko and Cindy scout the jungle before they leave, Libby and Michael are tasked with gathering fruit, and Ana-Lucia takes Bernard and Jin to gather fish. Off on their own, Libby apologizes to Michael for how he and his friends have been treated as they have "trust issues." Michael asks why they don't go inland to pick more fruit, and Libby explains they don't go that way because that's where "they" come from. The group meets back together, but Libby arrives without Michael - he ran off into the jungle on his own. Ana-Lucia tells everyone they're leaving now before Michael tells "them" where they are. Jin is adamant in going to find Michael and Eko decides to go with him while the rest of the group starts their hike.
- Chasing after Michael in the jungle, a boar charges Jin and knocks him down a hill. He comes to a stop by a dead body with a wooden steak protruding through the chest. Eko catches up to Jin and tells him the name of the man was Goodwin. Continuing on, Eko spots a fresh footprint and tells Jin that "they" don't leave footprints. They move on until Eko comes to a sudden stop and motions for Jin to keep quiet. The two hide in some brush and watch as several pairs of dirty and muddy legs walk by with the last one carrying a stuffed teddy bear hanging by a thin cord of rope. After they pass, Eko tells Jin that they don't have Michael as he passed in front of them and just missed them. The two arrive at a stream and Eko takes off to find his trail, telling Jin to remain where he is. Once Eko is gone, Michael appears on the other side of the stream and tells Jin to go back. Jin chases after him until he stops by a waterfall, yelling for Walt. Eko appears and tells Michael it's not a good idea to yell, that he has no idea what they're capable of and won't be found if they don't want to be. Michael decides to go back with Eko and Jin.
The Flashback
- Flashback: Sun
Sun's mother, Mrs. Paik, is helping dress her daughter ahead of a meeting with a prospective husband. She chastises Sun for not finding a husband in college, thus necessitating the services of a matchmaker, and warns her that she should find a husband before she gets any older. Sun believes she'll find a husband when the time is right, but her mother retorts that her father, Mr. Paik, says the time is now.
The matchmaker, Mrs. Shin, meets Sun and Mrs. Paik out front of the Seoul Gateway hotel. She tells Sun she'll love the man she's meeting as he's handsome, well-educated, and his family owns the hotel and twelve others. The group passes by Jin, who holds the door open for them, as they enter the hotel. At the meeting, Mrs. Shin asks Mrs. Paik and Mrs. Lee to leave so Sun and Jae Lee can have some time to get to know one another. Breaking the ice, Jae Lee asks Sun who is pressuring her more into marrying. Sun tells him it's her father via her mother. Jae Lee replies that it's his father via his mother via his aunt via his grandmother. He tells Sun he usually dreads these matchmaking set-ups, but today is different, and Sun agrees.
At a later date, Sun waits for Jae Lee at a restaurant in the Seoul Gateway. Outside, Jae Lee arrives in his car and Jin opens the car door for him. Jae Lee asks if he can borrow the flower in Jin's lapel for his date and Jin gives it to him. Jae Lee asks for Jin's name and thanks him. Inside, Sun and Jae Lee are having a nice lunch and Jae Lee expresses his desire to keep seeing Sun as their parents would be thrilled, no more matchmakers, no more pressure. Jae Lee decides to tell Sun a secret - he met an American woman at Harvard and, in six months, is going to move there and marry her. Jae Lee realizes Sun is hurt by this knowledge and that she didn't know their meetings were only a ruse to keep their parents happy. Sun tells Jae Lee she's happy for him, thanks him for the lunch, and leaves.
- Flashback: Jin
In an apartment, Jin is putting on a suit for a job interview while his friend, Tai Soo, is trying to tell him that this is the year love will find Jin. Consulting a destiny book, Tai Soo tells Jin that "love will look orange." Amused, Jin tells him that a man needs a goal in life, get promoted, and then he'll become respected - not like the son of a fisherman. Tai Soo points out a tag still on Jin's tie, but Jin tells him if he cuts it off then he wouldn't be able to return it.
At the job interview, Jin meets with Mr. Kim, the owner of the Seoul Gateway hotel. Mr. Kim asks Jin which village he's from as he's not from the city. Jin tells him he is from Namhae on the south coast, and Mr. Kim ridicules him, telling Jin he smells of fish and pulls the price tag off his tie. But he phones an assistant in with a uniform and tells Jin he's hired as the hotel doorman and will work rain or shine, and won't ask for a raise or time off. As a final caveat, Mr. Kim tells Jin that he's not to open the door to people like himself.
After "finishing" her lunch with Jae Lee, Jin opens the door for her and other guests entering and leaving. A poor man appears with his son and asks Jin if his son could use the bathroom. Jin tells him that only hotel guests can enter, but the boy needs to go right now. Jin acquiesces and lets the poor man and his son inside the hotel at the same time his boss, Mr. Kim, appears. Mr. Kim tells Jin that the boy can piss in the gutter for all he cares and that Jin's people are used to that. He tells Jin to find the poor man and his son and to remove them from the hotel. Instead, Jin hands Mr. Kim his uniform's gloves and hat, thanks him for the opportunity, and leaves.
Jin walks along the sidewalk by a river in the city. A girl in an orange dress passes by him and he turns to look, but accidentally runs into Sun who drops her purse. He helps pick up her purse and the two smile at one another.
