Season Fifteen of Late Show with David Letterman premiered on September 4, 2007. Like its late night counterparts, Late Show went off the air in November due to the Writers Guild strike. However, what set Late Show apart from programs like The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and Late Night with Conan O'Brien is that the program is wholly owned and produced by Worldwide Pants, Letterman's independent production company.

For the first two months of the strike, Letterman continued to pay his staff salaries despite production being shut down. He also paid the staff of The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, which is also produced by Worldwide Pants, and continued to pay rent on the Ed Sullivan Building where the show is taped. For this reason, Letterman and executive producer Rob Burnett have reportedly applied for a waiver that would allow the show to go on as normal with writers. The writers guild feared that accepting side-deals would weaken their bargaining position, however, and did not allow the deal to go through.

In mid-December, the Writers Guild reversed its position on individual deals and agreed to negotiate once again with Worldwide Pants. A deal was quickly worked out which accepted all of the original proposals by the guild, including on the subject of new media. The series returned, with its writers, on January 2, 2008.
