Biography

Denis Leary is an American actor and comedian who heralded the arrival of the new breed of 1990s stand-up comics with his 1991 comedy album and Showtime special, both entitled No Cure for Cancer. Throughout the decade, he made multiple film and television appearances, often playing characters similar to his bitter, short-tempered, chain-smoking stage persona. In more recent years, he has taken his stand-up persona in a new direction and found new depth and acclaim as an actor in two television shows he helped create—first in the short-lived ABC sitcom The Job as an NYPD cop, then, after 9/11, in the critical and audience FX hit drama Rescue Me as an FDNY firefighter.
