Stargate SG-1 was a long-running, popular series that aired on Showtime for five seasons and on Sci Fi Channel for five more seasons. It is a direct sequel to the 1994 feature film Stargate. Centering around the adventures of Earth's flagship interplanetary exploration team SG-1, the show chronicled the ongoing fight against the parasitic Goa'uld threat for the first eight seasons, then introduced a new evil for the team to fight in the ninth season, as well as shaking up the cast by replacing Jack O'Neill (Richard Dean Anderson) with Cameron Mitchell, played by Farscape veteran Ben Browder.

Due to the series' success, in its seventh season it spawned the spin-off series Stargate Atlantis, which follows a new set of characters in the distant Pegasus Galaxy.

Upon airing its 203rd episode, Stargate SG-1 became the longest running US-produced science fiction series in both number of seasons and episodes, having passed The X-Files' previous record of 202 episodes in 9 seasons.

On August 21, Sci Fi Channel announced that it had decided to cancel SG-1 at the end of its tenth season, while simultaneously renewing Stargate Atlantis for a fourth season. Executive Producer Robert C. Cooper issued a statement shortly after the cancellation announcement stating that the producers intend to continue the SG-1 franchise in some form even without Sci Fi Channel. MGM later announced that they were producing two direct-to-DVD movies to be released in 2008.
