In 1999, the creator of Alien Nation and SeaQuest DSV, Rockne S. O'Bannon along with The Jim Henson Company created Farscape. It follows the adventures of John Crichton, an American astronaut, who, while running an experiment, gets sucked into a wormhole. On the other side of the wormhole he gets captured by a group of escaped convicts, who have taken a living ship (Moya) as their own.
Because of the perspective from which Farscape is told, it is unique among science fiction shows because the main character is as much a stranger to the world as are the viewers. This enables him and the viewers to learn of the oddities of this world at the same time. This perspective also gives it a unique sense of humor, which is evidenced in the première, where Crichton, after grabbing a pistol from a guard and accidentally firing it, quips "Stop, or I'll fill you full of... Little yellow bolts of light."
Jim Henson's Creature Shop also did a fantastic job on the puppets that are used liberally throughout the show. Pilot & Rygel are main characters that are completely (outside of voices) played by puppets, something that other SF shows would likely do with Computer Graphics.
