Overview
2005 saw the return of Doctor Who after a 17 year hiatus, and with that brought a legion of new Who fans. This season avoided constant references to the past, as the majority of the viewers would likely not understand any callbacks (this has led to the season's DVD release to be called season one instead of season twenty-seven). The show was quite successful, regularly topping the BBC's ratings.
The season itself told the story of the Ninth Doctor, although his companion Rose Tyler was in the limelight more than him at times. The season also had a minor plot arc which appeared in all the episodes, but was not the focus of them: In each episode there is some form of reference to "Bad Wolf", which was explained at the end of the season. Season twenty-seven brought back the episodic format of classic Doctor Who, but exchanged the multi-episode serial stories of past Doctor Who seasons for single-episode stories with a few two-part episodes.
