Plot Overview

After escaping murder by the Slitheen, the Doctor uncovers the aliens' plot to destroy Earth and sell it for scrap. Then he, Rose, and Harriet Jones, trap themselves in the impenetrable Cabinet Room at 12 Downing Street.

Meanwhile, Rose's mother, Jackie, and her boyfriend, Micky Smith, are being hunted by another Slitheen. Trapped in Mickey's apartment, they come to terms with each other before Jackie confronts the Doctor (via telephone) about putting her daughter's life in danger, demanding he promise that Rose will always be safe. Before he can do so, Jackie and Mickey are attacked, and the Doctor has to find a way to save their lives.

With the knowledge of the danger that the Slitheen pose to everyone on Earth, the Doctor (still trapped in the Cabinet Room) makes a desperate gamble to stop the Slitheen...but it means putting Rose's life in even more danger.

Notes

"Bad Wolf"

  • The Doctor makes the young boy wash the "Bad Wolf" graffitti off the side of the TARDIS.

Arc Advancement

Happenings

  • The Doctor gives Mickey a virus to wipe out all references to him on the Internet.

Characters

  • The Doctor offers to let Mickey join him and Rose in the TARDIS, but he declines.
  • Mickey and Jackie come to terms with each other. She had blamed him for her daughter's disappearance for a year, and had been not-so-subtle in suggesting he'd murdered Rose.
  • The Doctor reveals that Harriet Jones will become Prime Minister, ushering in "Britain's Golden Age".

Referbacks

  • Rose uses the cell phone the Doctor improved in The End of the World to call her mother in order to explain how to defeat the Slitheen.

Memorable Moments

  • The Doctor's relationship with Rose is clearly growing closer, when he explains that he knows exactly how to stop the Slitheen threat but is reluctant to do so, as it would put Rose's life in more danger. "I could save the world but lose you," he tells her. She, however, displays an unswerving trust in the Doctor, as she doesn't even need to ask him his plan before she tells him to follow through with it.

Quotes

  • The Doctor: I think you'll find that the Prime Minister is an alien in disguise. (pauses) That's never gonna work, is it?
    Soldier: No.
    The Doctor: Fair enough.
  • The Doctor: Well, now...Yes, you see, the thing is...If I was you, if I was going to execute someone by backing them against the wall, between you and me, little word of advice...don't stand them against the lift!
  • The Doctor: (elevator opens to show a Slitheen roaring on the other side) Hello!
  • Joseph Green: I need to be naked!
General Asquith: Rejoice in it! Your body is magnificent.
  • The Doctor: (while saving Rose and Harriet from the Slitheens) Who the hell are you?
Harriet Jones: Harriet Jones, MP for Flydale North.
The Doctor: Nice to meet you.
    Harriet Jones: Likewise.
  • The Doctor: One more move and my sonic device will triplicate the flammability of this alcohol. Whoof! We all go up. So back off. Right then. Question time. Who exactly are the Slitheen?
    Harriet Jones: They're aliens.
The Doctor: Yes, I got that, thanks.
Slitheen: Who are you if not human?
    Harriet Jones: Who's not human?
    Rose Tyler: He's not.
    Harriet Jones: He's not human?
The Doctor: Can I have a bit of a hush? So, what's the plan?
Harriet Jones: Sorry. But he's got a northern accent!
Rose Tyler: Lots of planets have a north.
    The Doctor: I said hush.
  • Slitheen: Er, excuse me. Your device will do what? Triplicate the flammability?
The Doctor: That's what I said.
    Slitheen: You're making it up.
The Doctor: Oh well. Nice try. Harriet, have a drink. I think you're gonna need it.
Harriet Jones: You pass it to the left first.
    The Doctor: Sorry.
  • The Doctor: Three inches of steel lining every single wall. They'll never get in.
Rose Tyler: And how do we get out?
    The Doctor: Ah.
  • Mickey Smith: If anyone's gonna cry, it's gonna be me!
  • Jackie Tyler: You saved my life! Now that's embarrassing.
    Mickey Smith: You're telling me.
  • Harriet Jones: Excuse me, people are dead. This is not the time for making jokes.
Rose Tyler: Sorry. You get used to this when you're friends with him.
Harriet Jones: Well, that's a strange friendship.
  • The Doctor: Mickey the Idiot, I might just choke before I finish this sentence, but, uh, I need you.
  • Jackie Tyler: Answer me this: is my daughter safe? Is she safe? Will she always be safe? Can you promise me that?
  • The Doctor: That narrows it down to one planet! Raxacoricofallapatorius!
Mickey Smith: Oh, yeah, great. We can write 'em a letter!
  • The Doctor: Mickey, have you got any vinegar?
Mickey Smith: How should I know?
    The Doctor: It's your kitchen!
  • Jackie Tyler: What do you need?
    The Doctor: Anything with vinegar!
Jackie Tyler: Gherkins! Yeah! Pickled onions! Pickled eggs!
The Doctor: And you kiss this man?
  • Harriet Jones: Voicemail dooms us all.
  • Rose Tyler: We have to get out of here!
The Doctor: There's a way out.
    Rose Tyler: What?
The Doctor: There's always been a way out.
Rose Tyler: Then why don't we use it?
The Doctor: Because I can't guarantee your daughter will be safe.
Jackie Tyler: Don't you dare. Whatever it is, don't you dare!
The Doctor: That's the thing. If I don't dare, everyone dies.
    Rose Tyler: Do it.
The Doctor: You don't even know what it is. You'd just let me?
    Rose Tyler: Yeah.
Jackie Tyler: Please, Doctor! Please! She's my daughter! She's just a kid!
The Doctor: Do you think I don't know that? Cause this is my life, Jackie. It's not fun; it's not smart. It's just standing up and making a decision because nobody else will.
Rose Tyler: Then what are you waiting for?
The Doctor: I could save the world but lose you.
  • The Doctor: Mickey the Idiot, the world is in your hands.
  • Jackie Tyler: My daughter saved the world!
Rose Tyler: I think the Doctor helped a bit.
Jackie Tyler: All right, then. Him too.
  • Jackie Tyler: He's an alien! For all I know, he eats grass and safety pins and things.
  • The Doctor: You're happy to believe in something invisible, but if it's staring you in the face, nope! Can't see it! There's a scientific explanation for that. You're thick.
