Plot Overview
The TARDIS is brought off-course following a distress call. When the Doctor and Rose land on Earth, they come across an underground alien museum, run by the very rich and powerful Henry Van Statten. The Doctor discovers that the distress call was sent out by the last of the Daleks - the rest of the Dalek race, and the rest of the Time Lords destroyed each other in the last Time War. Against the Doctor's warnings, Van Statten does not kill the Dalek, but instead takes the Doctor prisoner. However, the Doctor is released once the Dalek escapes, and he has to destroy his enemy while Rose's life is on the line.
Notes
- Henry Van Statten's scan of the Doctor shows he has two hearts.
- The Doctor's race was wiped out in "the last of the Time Wars". Though he's the only one of his people left, he implies that this was not by choice.
"Bad Wolf"
- Henry Van Staten has the security call sign "Bad Wolf One".
Arc Advancement
Happenings
- The Doctor reveals that he caused the destruction of both his race and the Daleks - ending the Time War but also making him alone in the universe. How he did this (as well as how he survived) is still unknown.
Characters
- The Doctor only allows Adam to join them in the TARDIS once Rose says she didn't notice whether or not he was attractive.
- Rose has her first encounter with a Dalek. She not only displays pity for it, she intervenes when the Doctor wants to destroy it.
Referbacks
- In Henry Van Statten's museum, you see both a Slitheen arm and a Cyberman's head. The Slitheens were the enemies in the previous two episodes of Doctor Who (Aliens of London and World War Three). The Cybermen were enemies of previous incarnations of the Doctor.

Quotes
- The Doctor: The stuff of nightmares, reduced to an exhibit. I'm getting old.
- Rose Tyler: If someone's collecting aliens, that makes you Exhibit A.
- Henry Van Statten: So, the next President, what do you think? Republican or Democrat?
Diana Goddard: Democrat, sir.
Henry Van Statten: For what reason?
Diana Goddard: (pauses) They're just so funny, sir? - Henry Van Statten: We're hidden away with the most valuable collection of extraterrestrial artifacts in the world, and you just stumbled in by mistake.
The Doctor: Pretty much sums me up, yeah! - Rose Tyler: Blimey, you can smell the testosterone.
- Henry Van Statten: You, English, look after the girl. Go and canoodle or spoon or whatever it is you do. You, Doctor-With-No-Name, come and see my pet.
- Henry Van Statten: Go ahead, Doctor. Impress me.
- The Doctor: I've come to help. I'm the Doctor.
Dalek: Doctor?
The Doctor: Impossible!
Dalek: THE Doctor? Exterminate! EXTERMINATE! - The Doctor: The great space dustbin! How does it feel?
- The Doctor: Your race is dead. You all burned. All of you. Ten million ships on fire. The entire Dalek race, wiped out in one second!
Dalek: You lie!
The Doctor: I watched it happen! I MADE it happen!
Dalek: You destroyed us?
The Doctor: I had no choice.
Dalek: And what of the Time Lords?
The Doctor: Dead. They burned with you. The end of the last great Time War. Everyone lost.
Dalek: And the coward survived. - Dalek: I am alone in the universe.
The Doctor: Yep!
Dalek: So are you. - The Doctor: I know what you deserve! Exterminate!
- Dalek: Have pity!
The Doctor: Why should I? You never did! - The Doctor No one on this base is safe! No one on this planet!
- The Doctor: Release me if you want to live.
- The Doctor: What's the nearest town?
Henry Van Statten: Salt Lake City.
The Doctor: Population?
Henry Van Statten: One million.
The Doctor: All dead. If the Dalek gets out, it will murder every living creature, that's all it needs.
Henry Van Statten: But why would it do that?
The Doctor: Because it honestly believes they should die. Human beings are different, and anything different is wrong. It's the ultimate in racial cleansing, and you, Van Statten, you've let it loose! - The Doctor: If you want orders, follow this one. Kill yourself.
Dalek: The Daleks must survive!
The Doctor: The Daleks have failed! Why don't you finish the job and make the Daleks extinct, rid the universe of your filth? Why don't you just DIE?" - Rose Tyler: See you, then, Doctor. It wasn't your fault. Remember that, okay? It wasn't your fault. And do you know what? I wouldn't have missed it for the world.
- Dalek: What use are emotions if you will not save the woman you love?
- Dalek: I am the last of the Daleks.
The Doctor: You're not even that. Rose did more than regenerate you. You've absorbed her DNA. You're mutating.
Dalek: Into what?
The Doctor: Something new. I'm sorry.
Rose Tyler: Isn't that better?
The Doctor: Not for a Dalek. - Dalek: Rose, give me orders. Order me to die.
Rose Tyler: I can't do that.
Dalek: This is not life. This is sickness. I shall not be like you. Order my destruction! - Dalek: Are you frightened, Rose Tyler?
Rose Tyler: Yeah.
Dalek: So am I. - Rose Tyler: Is that the end of it, the Time War?
The Doctor: I'm the only one left. I win. How about that? - Rose Tyler: Adam was saying that all his life, he wanted to see the stars.
The Doctor: Tell him to go and stand outside, then.
Rose Tyler: He's all on his own, Doctor, and he did help.
The Doctor: He left you down there!
Rose Tyler: So did you!
The Doctor: Plus, he's a bit pretty. - Adam: Doctor, what are you doing standing inside a box?
