Season Two sees several cast changes, starting with the departure of Susan, who remains behind on Earth in the 22nd century, after the Dalek invasion of Earth. There she starts a new life with David Campbell, the young man she has fallen in love with.

Vicki, the survivor of a rocket ship crash, joins the Doctor, Ian, and Barbara on their journeys. Later after Ian, and Barbara both return to Earth, it seems that it will be just Vicki and the Doctor, but all is not what it seems.

An astronaut from Earth, Steven Taylor, somehow stumbled aboard the TARDIS. He was presumed dead by the Doctor and the others on Mechanus. They watched as the city he was in burned and collapsed thousands of feet to the ground, but he was able to climb down the cable before it broke and make his way to the TARDIS, where he collapsed. The Doctor is willing to accept him so long as he does not call him "Doc" again.

In addition to visiting various, significant historical events on Earth, series two tells us more about the non-humans that inhabit the universe as well. We learn that the Daleks have time travel capabilities, making them all the more menacing. We also learn that there are others, like the Doctor, who travel through time with their own TARDIS.
