In-Depth

  • This season is the debut of the second $25,000 sign, which is composed of green and blue light bulbs and shaped like an elongated hexagon.
  • In the bonus round, since contestants would mostly always pick the letters R, S, T, L, N and E, starting October 1988, they are now automatically given those letters and are now to asked to pick three consonants and one vowel. Time to solve the puzzle was shortened from 15 seconds to 10 seconds.
  • They introduced diamond-shape backdrops behind the contestants while they were in New York City. These would be used for road shows.
  • Over the summer, Jack Clark died and M.G. Kelly was the announcer for a few months, except for a two-week stint when they went to New York City to tape shows at Radio City Music Hall. Don Pardo was the announcer then. Eventually, Charlie O'Donnell, who was replaced by Jack Clark in 1980, came back on February 20, 1989, and he has been with the show from then until his own death on November 1, 2010.
