WUSA is the call sign for the CBS affiliate in Washington, D.C. It broadcasts on digital channel 34, displayed as virtual 9. Its subcarrier, on 34.2, shows the local weather radar.
Channel 9 signed on in 1949 as WOIC, the market's second CBS affiliate (it was previously on WMAL/channel 7 which is now ABC affiliate WJLA). A year later the station changed calls to WTOP, now the call used for the city's all-news radio station at 103.5 FM, to WDVM in 1978 and finally WUSA in 1986. With Washingon D.C. rougly 30 miles southwest of Baltimore, viewers there with good antennas could see CBS shows on WUSA that Baltimore's affiliates (WBAL/channel 11 to 1995, WJZ/channel 13 afterwards) would black out.
