Joan of Arcadia is the story of a teenage girl, Joan Girardi (Amber Tamblyn), who talks to God. God gives her certain tasks to perform each week, such as getting a job or building a boat. While Joan mostly does not understand why she must do these things, when she does them it positively affects those around her.

At the start of the first season Joan's father, Will Giradi (Joe Mantegna) gets a job as the new Police Chief of Arcadia. Her mother, Helen (Mary Steenburgen)is an art teacher. She has two brothers, one younger science-geek, Luke (Michael Welch), and the other older, Kevin (Jason Ritter), a former high-school sports star who is in a wheelchair as a result of a car accident.
