Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is an animated children's program. It started in syndication before being picked up by CBS. The show was based on the Mirage comic, although the show was much less grim, violent and dark than it's source material. The first adaptation of the comics, the show featured several changes and additions that have since become staples of the franchise.
The origin of the title characters started when four turtles fell into the sewers and are befriended by Hamato Yoshi, a Japanese man sent to New York who was forced to live in the sewers. One day he sees a strange green glow which transforms the four turtles into human-like creatures. Hamato (now Master Splinter) changes into a giant rat from the green glow and teaches the turtles the skills of the ninja as they team up with Channel 6 news reporter April O'Neil to battle against Yoshi's arch enemy Shredder and Krang, an alien warlord from Dimension X.
In the U.K, TMNT was broadcast under the name Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles due to fears that the "ninja" part of the logo was too extreme a word to use on British television at the time.
Despite its massive impact on pop culture, the series' popularity waned after seven years. This lead to a retooling for the show's final three seasons, which fans have called the "red sky" seasons.

DVD Releases
Summary
TMNT was initially released in volumes featuring episodes in chronological order, with the exception of bonus episodes from season 10 on volume 1. The first two volumes each included the respective complete first and second seasons, but volumes 3–6 each included 12 episodes from season three. Volumes were then stopped in favor of season sets starting with season four. There have been a couple oddities in the way of the first episode of season 4 being included in both the Volume 6 and Season 4 sets, and three season five episodes have not been released.
