The Tribune Company is an American media conglmerate based in Chicago, Illinois. It publishes daily newspapers – most prominently the Chicago Tribune – and tabloids, operates television stations and a radio station, and operates interactive services and websites.
The Tribune Broadcasting subsidiary operates 42 television stations in the United States, radio station WGN-AM in Chicago, national cable channel WGN America (based on Chicago's WGN-TV station), and the local Chicagoland Television (CLTV) cable news channel. The company also holds a minority interest in cable channel Food Network, together with majority owner Scripps Networks Interactive.
Sinclair announced last year it was acquiring the Tribune line of TV stations for $3.9 billion and assuming $2.7 billion in debt. It had to pass anti-trust issues, plus there was growing concern that Sinclair will jettison existing news staffs in favor of staffs and programming with a more conservative lean. In turn, Sinclair would have divested itself of nine stations to comply with ownership caps. On August 8, 2018, Tribune announced it was pulling out of the merger, plus they are filling $1 billion lawsuit against Sinclair for violations regarding the merger. There is now word that Nexstar, which acquired Media General, is acquiring Tribune for $4.1 billion. The acquisition is pending FCC approval. Nexstar will sell some stations to Tegna and Scripps to avoid possible triopolies, ownership cap and market overlap issues.
