Plot Overview

The Island

  • Sayid organizes the beach camp in order to make their way to the caves before nightfall. Charlie tells Sayid he needs one of the guns Jack left Sayid so he can protect Claire. But Sayid tells him he's emotionally involved and refuses. He starts leading a group to the caves. As Charlie and Claire are getting ready, Rousseau rushes in yelling that she needs Sayid now. Charlie runs off to get Sayid, leaving Claire behind with Rousseau. Rousseau asks Claire what she's named the child and asks if she can hold him. Claire tells her she hasn't named him and that it's not a good idea for her to hold him, but then gets a quick flashback of struggling with Rousseau and scratching her arm. Charlie returns with Sayid, finding Sun tending to a head wound inflicted on Claire - the baby is gone. Sayid tells Charlie that Rousseau is heading to where the black smoke is coming from because she saw black smoke the day her own child was taken by the others, and she believes she can make a trade with them as she thinks they want Claire's child. As Sayid and Charlie leave, Claire tells Charlie to get Aaron back. The two take a break by the Nigerian plane, and Sayid tells Charlie about the drug runners in disguise and shows him the drugs hidden away in the Virgin Mary statues. Continuing on, the two come across a blanket on the ground. Charlie rushes in to pick it up, but it sets off a booby-trap dropping a net of rocks on Charlie. Sayid tells Charlie that the gash on Charlie's head is bleeding too much and Charlie needs to go back, but Charlie refuses. Sayid pries open a bullet, spreading the gunpowder on Charlie's wound, and then lights it. With Charlie's wound cauterized, the two make it to the beach where the black smoke is coming from. Sayid calls out Rousseau and she appears with Aaron, telling them they weren't there and she just wanted her Alex back. She gives Sayid the child, who then gives him to Charlie. Rousseau tells them she heard the others whispering that they were coming for the boy. With Aaron in hand, Charlie begins calling Rousseau names and telling her she's pathetic. Sayid and Charlie return to the caves, and Charlie gives Aaron to Claire. She helps Charlie clean his wound, as we see the head of a Virgin Mary statue poking out of Charlie's pack.
  • At the Black Rock, Rousseau tells the group that the explosives are in the hold of the ship and leaves. Hurley and Arzt elect to stay outside while Jack, Locke, and Kate explore the insides of the ship. They come across skeletons chained up and Locke suggests they're slaves and the ship must have been in route to a mining colony. Jack and Locke carry a crate of dynamite outside, but Arzt yells at them to stop and put the crate down carefully. He explains to the group that dynamite sweats nitroglycerin, and nitroglycerin is the most dangerous and unstable explosive known to man. He wraps a stick in a wet piece of fabric and begins to tell the group they're only taking as much as they need because - and he's cut short as the dynamite explodes, killing him instantly. Locke and Jack begin carefully removing the dynamite - six sticks of dynamite, three carried by one and the remaining three to be carried by another to minimize their chances of being blown up and losing all the dynamite. Kate demands to carry one of the packs of dynamite, but Jack refuses. Locke decides to settle the dispute by drawing sticks to see who carries the dynamite - Locke and Kate draw the short sticks. The group begins their trek back to the hatch, but the monster appears. Locke takes his pack off and approaches the monster, while Jack takes his pack off and runs after Kate and Hurley, but turns around and goes after Locke. The monster grabs Locke's leg and tries to drag him down a hole, but Jack is able to grab a hold of Locke. Locke tells Jack to let go, but Jack refuses and tells Kate to get a stick of dynamite out of his pack. Kate retrieves the dynamite and Jack tells her to throw it in the hole while Locke tells her not to. She throws it in and it explodes, and a black cloud rises up from the ground and disappears into the jungle. Continuing on, Jack asks Locke what went on back there. Locke tells him that he was being tested, that Jack is a man of science and he is a man of faith. He tells Jack that the island brought them all there for a reason. Arriving at the hatch, Locke and Jack begin setting the dynamite, Kate runs the fuse, and Hurley takes the extra dynamite a couple hundred yards away. With the explosives set, Hurley rushes back but drops his flashlight on the hatch. Picking it up, he notices the numbers - 4 8 15 16 23 42 - are written on it. He runs to the others, yelling at them to stop, but Locke lights the fuse anyway. They remove the hatch door and discover a very long passageway with a broken ladder.
  • On the raft, Sawyer reads through the messages in the bottle. Walt tells him they're private and how would Sawyer like it if he read Sawyer's letter. Sawyer tells him he didn't write a letter because the only letter he's ever written was to the man he's going to kill. The raft hits a log in the water and the rudder comes loose. Sawyer jumps in to retrieve the rudder, and Michael and Jin pull him and the rudder in by rope. As Michael hands Sawyer his shirt, he finds the gun wrapped in the shirt. Later, Michael tries talking with Jin and looks over a list of Korean to English words that Sun gave to Jin. Jin gives him the watch from earlier and tells him to keep it. That night, they turn on the radar and a blip appears on the screen. Michael argues with Sawyer about firing a flare, believing it may not be a ship, but the blip begins moving away. Michael fires the flare and the blip starts heading towards them. A floodlight turns on and a boat approaches the raft, and everyone begins celebrating. A bearded man aboard the ship asks them what they're going so far out and Michael tells him they part of a group of survivors of a plane crash on the island. However, the bearded man tells him that they're going to have to take the boy. Michael refuses and Sawyer goes for his gun, but one of the men on the boat shoots Sawyer in the shoulder and Sawyer falls overboard. Jin dives in after him while two men jump aboard the raft and grab Walt. Michael is pushed into the water as a woman on the boat tosses an improvised explosive device on the raft, which obliterates it. The boat takes off into the inky black night with Walt as Michael yells for his son.

The Flashback

  • Flashback: Jin/Sayid

Sun accidentally spills a drink on Jin and he asks her where the restroom is. She points out to him where it is and he heads over there, passing Sayid who's being escorted by two security guards. One of the guards apologizes to Sayid for the inconvenience, but his bag was unattended. Sayid asks if he's free to go and tells them he has a plane to catch. In the bathroom, a man in a Hawaiian shirt asks Jin for a paper towel but realizes he doesn't speak English. The man then speaks Korean to Jin, telling Jin that he works for Mr. Paik and that he knows Jin is planning to run away. He reminds Jin to take the watch to Mr. Paik's friend in California and, if he does anything else, he'll lose Sun. The man tells Jin he'll never be free.

  • Flashback: Charlie

Charlie is in a hotel room searching for his heroin. A girl in his bed wakes up and asks him what's going on. He tells her his flight to L.A. leaves in a couple of hours and he has to get ready. She asks him if there's any more heroin, but Charlie tells her its all gone and they did it all last night and that he'll look her up next time in Sydney and he'll send her an autographed copy of his CD. The girl tells him she doesn't care about "crap CD" or his "piece of crap band" and demands another hit of heroin. She sees him trying to hide a baggie in his hand and the two struggle for it. She beats Charlie, calling him pathetic, and finally leaves him there on the floor clutching the baggie of heroin.

  • Flashback: Michael

Michael and Walt are waiting in the Sydney airport terminal. Walt is engrossed with his GBA SP and Michael tells him to stay there while he calls work. At the pay phone, Michael calls his mother and tells her he's thinking that she could take Walt. He doesn't know what to do with him, that he's not supposed to be his and this was never part of the plan. He hangs up and discovers Walt standing behind him. Walt tells him he needs new batteries.

  • Flashback: Hurley

Hurley wakes up in his hotel room and discovers there's been an electrical outage in his room and his alarm clock turned off - he's late for his flight and his mom's birthday is the next day. He frantically packs and heads for the elevator, but discovers it's full and runs for the stairs. Inside the elevator, Charlie yells at him that "some of us have a bloody flight to make." Driving to the airport, Hurley's car breaks down on the side of the road. He gets out and starts running to the airport. Arriving at the check-in, the ticket agent tells Hurley he's confirmed for seat 20G, but the airline has a policy that a man of his size must purchase two tickets. Hurley agrees and gets a second seat, but the ticket agent tells him it appears his flight is already boarding in the Oceanic International terminal and he's currently in the domestic terminal. Hurley rushes through the airport and tries to cut to the front of a security checkpoint, but the security agent tells him to get to the back of the line. As Hurley heads back, Arzt is at the front frustrated with a man in front of him. After he gets through the checkpoint, Hurley flags down an old man in a scooter and offers him 1,600 dollars for his scooter. Using the scooter, Hurley makes it to his gate as they're closing the door. The gate agent tells him the jet way is closed, but Hurley pleads with her to let him on the plane. She calls the plane to tell them they have one more and tells Hurley they'll let him on. Hurley gives the gate agent a large hug and boards.

  • Flashback: Locke

Locke is in his wheelchair at the Oceanic gate watching the elderly and disabled walking by him and boarding. The gate agent approaches and tells Locke that the special wheelchair they use to load disabled passengers is missing and they might be able to get him on the flight. Another gate agent tells her they could carry him on if Locke doesn't mind. Sighing, Locke tells them it'll be fine and the two gate agents carry Locke aboard the plane and place him in his seat. Locke pulls out a flight safety card from the seat back but drops it in the aisle, He tries to bend down and reach it, but it's too far away and he gives up.

  • Flashback: Various

We see passengers boarding Oceanic flight 815. The Marshall escorts Kate, who has a jacket concealing her handcuffs, to her seat. We see Sawyer walking down an aisle looking for his seat. Jack puts his luggage in a compartment bin near Locke. Charlie tries to stuff his guitar case in one of the airplane's closets. Sayid sits down in his seat and notices a man a couple seats over staring at him, but the man looks away when Sayid looks at him. Jin and Sun are in their seats; Jin looking at the watch he's to deliver to Mr. Paik's associate and Sun is flipping through a Korean magazine. Michael buckles Walt's seatbelt as Walt is too busy playing his video game. The Marshal secures Kate in her seat. Sayid pulls out the photographs of Nadia he received from the two agents in Sydney and looks at them. Shannon frantically looks through her bag for something, but Boone pulls out an extra inhaler and hands it to her. Drenched in sweat from his run to get to the plane, Hurley makes his way to his seat and gives a thumbs up to Walt who is looking at him, and Walt smiles back. Hurley takes his seat, puts on his headphones, and pulls out a Green Lantern & Flash comic book. Arzt helps Claire put her bags in the overhead compartments. Locke watches Jack put his luggage in the overhead compartment and, once finished, Jack gives Locke a friendly nod and sits down.

Memorable Moments

Quotes

  • Arzt: What, am- am I boring you?
    Hurley Huh?
Arzt: You know what? I'm sorry. I'm sorry that I'm not cool enough to be part of your merry little band of adventurers.
    Hurley: What?
Arzt: I know a clique when I see it. I teach high school, pally! You know, you people think you're the only ones on this island doing anything of value. I got news for you. There were 40 other survivors of this plane crash, and we are all people too.
    Hurley: Oookay.
    [...]
Arzt: And it's not just the teenagers either. You know, the gym teachers, you think they let me sit with them in the cafeteria? No. They do not.
Hurley: Dude. This is all in your head.
Arzt: Really? Then you explain to me why Kate gets the best pieces of wreckage to build her shelter? And the Korean guy. Does he catch fish for everybody on the island? No. He does not. He doesn't. And some of us have actually lost weight while we were here. Now you mind telling me where you're hding the carbs?
  • Locke: I'm removing the driest pieces to minimize our risk transporting it. You ever play Operation?
Jack: Sure. "Don't touch the sides."
Locke: [maneuvers his hands to pick up the dynamite] I... I always... got nailed... on the funny bone. [touches a stick of dynamite] Bzzzz!
Jack: [flinches] You like to play games, John?
    Locke: Absolutely.
  • Hurley: So, dude, what do you think's inside that hatch thing?
Locke: What do you think's inside it?
Hurley: Stacks of TV dinners from the fifties or something. And TVs and cable. Some cell phones. Clean socks. Soap. Twinkies. You know, for dessert after the TV dinners. Twinkies keep for, like, 8,000 years, man.
Locke: [laughs] I like Twinkies too.
Hurley: Come on, really. What do you think's inside?
Locke: Hope. I think hope's inside.
  • Jack: That thing was taking you down the hole and you asked me to let you go.
Locke: It wasn't going to hurt me.
Jack: No, John, it was going to kill you.
    Locke: I seriously doubt that.
Jack: Look, I need for you to... I need for you to explain to me what the hell's going on inside your head, John. I need to know why you believe that that thing wasn't going to...
Locke: I believe I was being tested.
    Jack: Tested.
Locke: Yeah. Tested. I think that's why you and I don't see eye to eye sometimes, Jack. Because you're a man of science.
Jack: Yeah. And what does that make you?
Locke: Me? Well, I'm a man of faith. Do you really think all this is an accident? That we, a group of strangers survived. Many of us with just superficial injuries. You think we crashed on this place by coincidence? Especially, this place. We were brought here for a purpose. For a reason. All of us. Each one of us was brought here for a reason.
Jack: Brought here? And who brought us here, John?
Locke: The island. The island brought us here. This is no ordinary place. You've seen that, I know you have. But the island chose you too, Jack. It's destiny.
Jack: Did you talk with Boone about destiny, John?
Locke: Boone was a sacrifice that the island demanded. What happened to him at that plane was a part of a chain of events that led us here, that led us down a path, that led you and me to this day, to right now.
Jack: And where's that path end, John?
Locke: The path ends at the hatch. The hatch, Jack. All of it. All of it happened so that we could open the hatch.
Jack; No. No, we're opening the hatch so that we can survive.
Locke: Survival is all relative, Jack.
Jack: [sighs] I don't believe in destiny.
Locke: Yes, you do. You just don't know it yet.
