Petty was born October 13, 1963, in Chattanooga, TN. She moved to Iowa, and was graduated from North High in Sioux City, IA. After a brief career of graphic design in Omaha, NE, she turned her attention to acting. After a guest spot on Booker, she gained a starring role on that show as Suzzanne Dunne for the remainder of the series run.

Petty starred in Point Break with Keanu Reeves, as his surfer girlfriend. She gained attention in the film, A League of Their Own, before takaing the lead in Tank Girl. She continues to work in television an movies, including a reoccuring role as Livewire in the animated Superman and Batman franchise. In 2008, her directorial debut was The Poker House, a semi autobiographical film, written and directed by Petty.
