ER takes place within the heart of Chicago at County General, a teaching hospital that has been through its fair share of catastrophes and miracles. The show focuses on the emergency room at County, and the lives of the people who work in it. ER is one of the longest running and most decorated shows on television and, despite significantly lowered ratings compared to its earlier seasons where it was routinely the top show for the week, ER remains one of NBC's trademark hits.
During the 2006-2007 television season, ER ran for twelve straight weeks in the fall culminating in a winter cliffhanger. Originally, the new show The Black Donnellys would have taken over ER's time slot until it returned in the spring season. However, because ER received significantly stronger ratings than it had in previous recent seasons, NBC had decided to rerun ER during the off-season.
ER has been renewed for its 15th season, which has been announced to be its last.
