Plot Overview
The Island
- With Hurley's discovery of Ethan missing from the flight's passenger manifest, Jack and John take off into the jungle to find Claire and Charlie. Locke finds Claire's bag and footprints - at least three distinct sets all over the place. He tells Jack it looks like there may have been a struggle and they've been taken. Locke doesn't want to rush headlong into the jungle, but Jack demands to know which way the tracks go and Jack heads off on his own. Locke, Kate and Boone catch up to Jack. Locke tells Jack he should go back because he doesn't want anything to happen to the only trained physician on the island, but Jack refuses. The trail eventual forks into two separate trails. Jack suggests they split into two groups and, against Locke's wishes to stay together, Jack and Kate head off in one direction while Locke and Boone take the other.
- At the caves, Locke returns to organize a search party. Kate and Boone volunteer to go with Locke. Michael tells Locke he doesn't want to just sit around waiting, but Locke tells him anyone else will just slow them down. Michael puts together another search party and Locke suggests he go south as his group is heading north.
- After talking with Walt about Ethan, Sawyer discovers Sayid has returned. Sayid tells Sawyer about the French woman, her science expedition, and her talk about others on the island. He tells Sawyer that he heard something in the jungle surrounding him, but then changes the subject. Sawyer tells him that the tide is coming up the beach and the fuselage is almost in the water - and he kept his signal fire burning.
- Hurley and Walt play several games of backgammon. Walt's luck seems to trump Hurley's as Hurley now owes him $20,000. Hurley bows out of playing another game for doulbe or nothing and tells Walt he'll get his money.
- Jack and Kate become separated in the rain. But he finds Ethan. Ethan tells Jack that if he does not stop following him, he will kill one of them. He beats Jack in a fight and disappears before Kate arrives. Jack takes off after Ethan but finds Charlie hung from a tree. Kate is able to cut him down and Jack performs CPR on him. After it appears that Charlie is beyond saving, he's miraculously resuscitated.
- At the caves, Jack treats Charlie's injuries and tells him they'll go back out after sunrise to find Claire. Charlie tells him he didn't see or hear anything, that he doesn't remember anything. All they wanted was Claire.
- Out in the jungle, Boone decides to go back as it's too dark to follow any trail, but Locke wants to keep going because he can feel "it". He tosses a flashlight at Boone to help him head back, but it hits something metallic in the ground. They start digging.
The Flashback
- Flashback: Jack
Jack is in sugery working on a patient. She goes into arrest and Jack attempts to use the defibrulator to restart her heart, repeatedly. Christian Shephard steps in and tells Jack it's over - to call it. Angered and frustrated, Jack tells him to call it himself. After the operating room is cleared of everyone else, Christian lectures Jack about barging into his O.R. and working on his patient. Jack tells him one of the nurses came to get him, to tell him that his father's hands were shaking, that he made a mistake and cut the patient's hepatic artery. Jack asks his father how many drinks he had at lunch.
The next day, Jack is called to his father's office and given a document. Christian tells Jack that the document contains the truth, that a patient was brought into the E.R. following a car accident, rushed into surgery after she crashed in the E.R. with massive internal bleeding, Jack joined him and, in spite of their most heroic efforts, the patient succumbed to her injuries. Jack tells his father he won't sign the document. Christian tells him that accidents happen in surgeries all the time, but if he mentions alcohol then that's the only fact that's going to matter and he'll be stripped of his license. He promises Jack that what happened yesterday will never happen again and that this is not just about his career, but it's his life. Jack caves in and signs the document.
Later, at the committee hearing about the patient's death, Christian goes over again the details of what occurred. One of the members asks Christian if he was aware of the patient's pregnancy when he went into the procedure and Christian tells him he absolutely knew but focused on saving the mother as she was extremely early into the pregnancy. At this revelation, Jack tells the board that he needs to revise his statement. He tells them that he didn't come into the O.R. until well into the procedure, that one of the nurses warned him his father was operating under the influence, that his father had severed the patient's hepatic artery which, in his opinion, lead to her death.

Memorable Moments
Quotes
- Boone: I heard you're forming a search party. Can I help?
Shannon: This is a deserted island. There's no choppers. No Amber alerts. How exactly are you gonna find them?
Locke: By following Ethan's trail. No one can walk through the wilderness without leaving signs, bending blades of grass, breaking twigs, especially with captives in tow. And yes, I could use another hand if you're up for it.
Boone: I'm up for it. - Locke: Jack! Jack? Good thing you were going in a circle. Not much of a search grid, but we never would have found you otherwise.
Kate: Did you find anything?
Jack: No.
Locke: You should go back to the caves... Sayid's leg.
Jack: I dressed Sayid's leg. You found me. We can find Charlie and Claire. Now, do we have a trail to follow or not?
Locke: Jack, this was my fault.
Jack: What?
Locke: I hunted with Ethan, I spent time with him. I never sensed anything... off. But for everything I know about hunting and tracking, whoever he is, he knows more. If we catch up with him, I don't want anything to happen to the only trained physician on the island. So go back, be the doctor. Let me be the hunter.
Jack: Can we go now? - Michael: I'm trying to help, and all the guy can tell me is "Go south"? Like what? I'm gonna get in his way or something?
Hurley: We're all tweaked, man. Locke's just feeling it like the rest of us.
Michael: So what? I got five other guys who are going out there with me. Putting our necks on the line to find Charlie and Claire. All I'm saying is, I'm getting sick of being treated like a second-class citizen around here because Mount Baldy can bag a boar.
Walt: He knows a lot more than how to catch a boar. Mr. Locke's a warrior. He can hunt, he can track stuff, and he's the only one who brought knives. So if it were me, I'd listen to him.
Michael: Well, I don't want you to. You understand? You stay with Hurley. I might not be a warrior, but I am going south.
Hurley: Back home, I'm known as something of a warrior myself. - Jack: Charlie's leaving these for us to follow. They went that way.
Kate: Unless Charlie isn't the one leaving them. If Ethan knows that we're behind him, he could be setting up a dummy trail. Take off in one direction, double back in his own footprints.
Boone: Wait, now you're a tracker?
Locke: You're just full of surprises. - Boone: Red shirt.
Locke: Huh?
Boone: Red shirt. You ever watch Star Trek?
Locke: Oh, not really.
Boone: The crew guys that would go down to the planet with the main guys, the captain and the guy with the pointy ears. They always wore red shirts, and they always got killed.
Locke: Yeah?
Boone: Yeah.
Locke: Sounds like a piss-poor captain.
Boone: What do you do in the real world, Mr. Locke?
Locke: It's John.
Boone: John.
Locke: Why don't you guess?
Boone: Well, you're either a taxidermist or a hit man.
Locke: I was a... regional collections supervisor for a box company.
Boone: A box company?
Locke: They made boxes.
Boone: Yeah, right. - Walt: You owe me 20,000 dollars!
Hurley: Don't worry, you'll get it.

- I can't help but think that this was just one gigantic filler episode. Jack, like Kate, isn't exactly the most personable of characters, even though there seems to be an obligation to like them because they are the leads in this so-called ensemble show. This episode is the first, but not the last, time on Lost where it seems like a lot is going on, but in the end it turns out to be nothing more than smoke and mirrors.
