WWOR is the call sign for the MyNetworkTV affiliate in New York City, licensed to Secaucus, N.J. It broadcasts on digital channel 38 (displayed as virtual channel 9) with a subcarrier (38.2) that simulcasts FOX affiliate WNYW/channel 5, which like WWOR is owned and operated by FOX. WWOR's transmitter is atop the Empire State Building in New York.
Channel 9 analog signed on in 1949 as independent WOR (counterpart to WOR radio at 710 on the AM dial) and was the last of the New York City VHF stations. It was a standard independent, fighting for ratings against the city's other independents, WNYW/channel 5 (at first was WABD then WNEW) and WPIX/channel 11. RKO owned channel 9 and it was based in New York, but after some legal wrangling RKO sought to move the station's license to New Jersey. It became the only commercial station in New Jersey and RKO would sell the station to Buckley Broadcasting. Their offices and studios remain in New York.
In the 1980s, WOR became one of the so-called "superstations," beaming its signal via cable and satellite nationwide. The "Syndication Exclusivity Rule" came about, stating that syndicated programs that the station carried had to be blacked out elsewhere in favor of alternate programming due to market broadcast rights. The station would change calls to WWOR in 1995 upon becoming a UPN affiliate and drop out of the superstation arena in 1997 as its transponder space was sold to Discovery Communications and replaced by Animal Planet. It became a My Network TV affiliate in 2006.
