From The TV IV
NewsRadio was a sitcom set in the studios of WNYX, the second-best news channel in New York City. While perpetually in danger of being cancelled, the five seasons the show was on continually produced some of the most entertaining half-hours of television, although some say the show never recovered from Phil Hartman's death after the fourth season.
The series stars Dave Nelson, a Wisconsin native and new news director at WNYX. His staff includes an egotistical announcer Bill McNeal, his cohost Catherine Duke, incompetent journalist Matthew Brock, self-assured producer Lisa Miller, ditzy assistant Beth, paranoid handyman Joe Garrelli, and renegade millionare Jimmy James. The show, like any good sitcom, took each character seriously to create believeable situations. Except for the episode in space.
Between the excellent ensamble cast and brilliant writing, NewsRadio remains one of the last hurrahs of the old multi-camera, studio audience sitcom genre.
Cast
1Catherine Duke was played by Ella Joyce in the pilot.
