WWOR is the call sign for the MyNetworkTV affiliate in New York City, licensed to Secaucus, N.J. It broadcasts on digital channel 25 (displayed as virtual channel 9) with a subcarrier (25.2) that simulcasts FOX affiliate WNYW/channel 5, which like WWOR is owned and operated by FOX. WWOR's transmitter is atop the Empire State Building in New York.
Channel 9 analog went on the air on October 11, 1949 as independent station WOR (counterpart to WOR radio at 710 on the AM dial) and was the last of the New York City VHF stations. It was a standard independent, fighting for ratings against the city's other independents, WNYW/channel 5 (at first was WABD then WNEW) and WPIX/channel 11. RKO owned channel 9 and it was based in New York, but after some legal wrangling, RKO sought to move the station's license and studios to New Jersey, making it the only commercial station in that state. RKO would sell the station to MCA in 1986.
In the 1980s, WOR became one of the so-called "superstations," beaming its signal via cable and satellite nationwide. The "Syndication Exclusivity Rule" came about, stating that syndicated programs that the station carried had to be blacked out elsewhere in favor of alternate programming due to market broadcast rights, causing WWOR's satellite carrier, Eastern Microwave, to place substitute programming on the station's national feed outside of the New York City area. MCA changed the station's calls to the current WWOR in 1987, then it had to spin WWOR off into a separate company called Pinelands Inc. on January 1, 1991 after MCA was acquired by Japanese electronics company Matsushita Electric in 1990, as FCC rules do not allow foreign companies to own more than 25% of American TV stations. The station became a charter UPN affiliate in 1995 and dropped out of the superstation arena in 1997 as its transponder space was sold to Discovery Communications and replaced by Animal Planet, although Dish Network now offers WWOR's native New York-based feed as a superstation. After UPN and The WB merged in September 2006 to become The CW, WWOR became a MyNetworkTV affiliate at that point due to the CW affiliation going to WPIX.
