On December 3rd, a month after the strike started, Daly returned to the air without writers. He explained on the first episode back that if he didn't start up production again, the 75 or so non-writing staff members would have been fired. Unofficial reports indicated that it was very likely that he would lose his show entirely if he didn't return to the air. When the program returned, it retained its typical format except without an announcer or monologue. The opening bit was changed to Daly winging it, often showing pictures or talking about his weekend. Occasionally they would have practical unwritten sketches like having the prop master build something with a couple of different materials and present it on the show.
The Writers Guild immediately chastised Daly for reportedly seeking "scab" jokes from friends and family through a hotline that he set up for broadcast on the air. During the December 11th taping, several striking writers infiltrated the Last Call audience and disrupted an interview with Jerry Rice. Between five and twenty writers left the audience when a producer threatened to have disruptors prosecuted.
