Battlestar Pegasus

The battlestar Pegasus is an advanced Mercury-class battlestar commanded by Admiral Helena Cain. Presumed lost with the rest of the Colonial Fleet, the Pegasus actually managed to escape the destruction of the Colonies. While the Pegasus was advanced enough to have integrated networked systems and Baltar's virused Command Navigation Program, the Pegasus was in for maintenance at the time of the Cylon attack and, as such, its networked computer systems were offline. When the Cylons nuked the shipyard, Admiral Cain rounded up everyone she could from around the shipyard and ordered the Pegasus to make a blind FTL jump.

Unfortunately for the Pegasus crew, one of the shipyard personnel they picked up was Gina, a Cylon agent of the same model as Baltar's tormentor Six. 700 of the Pegasus' crew were lost in a Cylon attack on the Pegasus instigated by Gina, leaving approximately 1750 living crewpersons aboard ship.

Cain and the Pegasus harried the Cylons for months before encountering a Cylon fleet group composed of two baseships, several assorted support vessels, and one massive, unidentified Cylon vessel. It was at this point that the Pegasus rendezvoused with the Colonial Fleet and the battlestar Galactica: the Cylon fleet in question was tailing Galactica at a distance.

Without the regulating influence of some semblance of a government and a real mission, the Pegasus' crew seems to have gone more than a little insane, doing things that the Galactica crew would never dream of to their Cylon prisoner and generally disrespecting the Colonial remnant's government and the Galactica crew. It remains to be seen whether this attitude is confined to the Pegasus senior staff or if it is a wide-spread attitude throughout the entire Pegasus crew.

Cain was killed by Gina after Baltar helped her make her escape, and command of the ship was given to her executive officer, Jack Fisk. Fisk himself was later killed by black marketeers after he became too greedy, and command was turned over to former chief engineer Barry Garner. Garner was himself killed after flying Pegasus into a Cylon ambush and command given to Lee "Apollo" Adama.

Lee commanded the ship until its destruction during the operation to rescue survivors from New Caprica. Knowing that it would be a one-way mission, he left his air group behind to defend the fleet and jumped the ship in without its fighter screen. The ship was attacked by four Cylon baseships and Apollo set a course to ram one of the baseships and ordered the crew to abandon ship. Pegasus rammed one baseship, destroyed it, and debris from the subsequent explosion destroyed yet another baseship.

Trivia

Pegasus' nameplate
  • Pegasus has approximately 1750 living crew with at least 700 casualties since the fall of the Colonies.
  • The Pegasus' appearance is much closer to the original series battlestars than the Galactica's is.
  • After a failed attempt to revive the Lost in Space television series by FOX, BSG producers Ronald D. Moore and David Eick acquired the abandoned sets (presumably for the Jupiter 2 spacecraft), figuring they would eventually find a use for them. The sets were radically redesigned into the interiors of the battlestar Pegasus, since building new sets would have been prohibitively expensive.
  • Pegasus' nameplate number is BS-62. Its Battlestar Group number is also clearly visible in "Resurrection Ship, Part 2" as BSG-62.
