Battlestar Galactica

Galactica computer screen
The Battlestar Galactica is an aging Colonial warship, old enough that it took part in the original Cylon War. When the rest of the fleet was either scrapped or upgraded to include integrated networking defense systems, Galactica was not. At the time of the beginning of the miniseries, the Battlestar Galactica is about to be mothballed and turned into a museum, not unlike the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Intrepid here on Earth.

The Colonial Fleet element that Galactica was last assigned to before its scheduled decommissioning was Battlestar Group 75 (hence "BSG-75" on the Galactica's seal). Ronald D. Moore has described the "Battlestar Group" as similar to a modern-day aircraft carrier battle group. Supposedly a BSG would be comprised of at least one battlestar, probably more, plus various support vessels, lesser military vessels, and so on.

Colonial Battlestar

At the time of its decommissioning, the Battlestar Galactica had been stripped of most of its fighters, its main guns had been removed, and one of its landing pods had been retrofitted into a museum and filled with outdated Mark II Vipers, rendering it useless for ship storage and launching. When the Cylons attacked, the Mark II Vipers had to be moved across the ship into the other landing pod before they could be sent into battle.

Galactica subsequently proved its worth by withstanding a direct tactical nuclear strike and holding off multiple Cylon baseships after rearming at the abandoned Colonial munitions dump Ragnar Anchorage, then provided fire support for the Colonial remnant as they escaped. Galactica now serves as the protector of the fleet, being as it is apparently the only armed vessel in the entire Colonial fleet and the only vessel in the fleet with the capability to process and reprocess water in sufficient quantities for the Colonial survivors. Apparently Galactica is also the primary source of medicine and doctors, since the Galactica's chief doctor spends time out in the fleet doing checkups, which caused problems when Galactica's commanding officer was shot by a Cylon infiltrator and the doctor was out in the fleet.

Galactica's few Marines have also served as defensive forces and police for the fleet on multiple occasions, such as when Tom Zarek's band of freed prisoners took Captain Lee Adama, Billy Keikeya, and their crew hostage on the fleet's prison transport.
