Bill Clinton is the 42nd President of the United States. Like all presidents since Gerald Ford, he has been lampooned many times before, during and after his term in office by the cast of SNL. However, despite his eight-year term, he has had surprisingly few actors portray him. Excluding a two-appearance run by Michael McKean and a one-off appearance by Dana Carvey as a younger version, Clinton has only been portrayed by Phil Hartman and Darrell Hammond.

Basic Information

Former Governor of Arkansas Bill Clinton was considered a dark horse candidate in the 1992 Democratic primaries, but his surprise win in New Hampshire made him the front runner and eventually the nominee to face then-President George Bush. The race became one of the rare three-way presidential races in American history when billionaire businessman H. Ross Perot entered the race as an independent candidate. In a narrow victory, Clinton defeated Bush, and many cited the failing economy and Perot's competition drawing votes from the incumbent.

Political sketches had been a staple of Saturday Night Live since Chevy Chase first lampooned Gerald Ford, but they had been less common throughout much of the 1980s. In the six and a half years between the announcement of his candidacy through the end of SNL's eleventh season, President Ronald Reagan had appeared as a sketch character on SNL 25 times, less than his predecessor, Jimmy Carter, had in a comparatively uneventful five years. (For a point of comparison, Ford had 11 appearances in a mere 16 months between the debut of the series and the end of his presidency.) However, the SNL Renaissance brought political sketches back to the fore. For all his popular characters, Dana Carvey was perhaps most famous on the show for being the Bush impressionist during Bush's 1988 election campaign and four years in office, and he made 32 appearances in the role from the announcement of Bush's candidacy in February 1988 through Clinton's inauguration in January 1993. It became very common to see Carvey in the glasses, wig and sketch during the cold opening sketch in particular.

This tradition of presidential impersonations was continued throughout the Clinton years. In his year as a candidate and eight years in office, Clinton was impersonated on 73 episodes of SNL—the record for any president as of the 32nd season. Despite that record, only four actors impersonated Clinton throughout his term, and two of them (Carvey and Michael McKean) impersonated him less than three times. The lion's share of the Clinton impersonations were done by Phil Hartman and later Darrell Hammond—the latter of whom, at 47 appearances, holds a record for appearances in an impersonation of a sitting president which is unlikely to be broken any time soon.

Just as Clinton's party affiliation and stance on social and economic issues represented a clear break from his predecessor, so, too, did his personality and public image, which in turn led to a new direction for satire of him. Where Bush had been seen as dull—even sexless—Clinton, despite his chubbiness and white hair, was seen as charismatic and charming. His numerous sex scandals even lent an air of sleaze to his administration, but perhaps due to the peace and prosperity which marked his term in office, this sleaziness was considered almost attractive by many Americans. In the most famous scandal of his administration, Clinton was accused of having an illicit affair with intern Monica Lewinsky. The incident led to impeachment hearings in Congress, but Clinton stayed in office and emerged from it more popular than ever. The scandal and Clinton's popularity was, of course, great fodder for SNL and Hammond, as well as Molly Shannon, Ana Gasteyer and John Goodman, who portrayed Lewinsky, First Lady Hillary Clinton and key scandal figure Linda Tripp, respectively.

Clinton was also a very young president, and as a result, he has been able to be very active in the public eye since leaving office. This, coupled with his wife Hillary's election to the US Senate in 2000 and consideration as a front-runner for the 2008 presidential election, as well as the popularity of Hammond's impression, has led Clinton to another SNL record. In the Weekend Update segment in the season thirty-two premiere, Clinton broke Richard Nixon's long-standing record for most impersonations of a surviving former president in SNL history.
