Season Seven of Red Dwarf premiered on January 17, 1997.
Season seven sees many significant changes. Rimmer enters training and becomes the next Ace Rimmer, leaving the show (due to scheduling conflicts with actor Chris Barrie). In his place the show gets a new regular: Kristine Kochanski as Lister's ex-girlfriend from a parallel universe.
Kryten develops an intense, effeminate jealousy of Miss Kochanski. He feels that she and Lister will pair off leaving him alone for centuries on end, just like when the crew of the Nova 5 died.
In a bizarre twist we learn that Lister is his own father ... and that Kochanski is his biological mother (via artificial insemination).
Lister loses an arm in the episode Epideme only to have it reconstructed in the next episode, Nanarchy. Nanarchy also sees the return of Holly (as a male) and the reconstruction of Red Dwarf, setting the stage for season eight.
