Basic Information
Ace Rimmer is a flamboyant, larger-than-life, hero who always gets his man ... and always gets the woman too. He is a dashing Space Corps test pilot, and a modern renaissance man. He gets along with everyone, he genuinely cares about other people, and everyone thinks he's great. Everybody just loves him. What a guy!
Arnold Rimmer can't stand Ace, because Ace Rimmer is a parallel universe version of himself. Even though they are basically the same person, Ace succeeded where he could not. Ace is/was a test pilot for the Space Corps, and Arnold is a second technician unable to pass his astro-navigation exam, despite having taken the exam at least 13 times.
Vitually every parallel universe has an Ace Rimmer, but only one has the pathetic smeghead that we know as Arnold Rimmer.
Character History
Up until the age of seven, the histories of Ace Rimmer and our Arnold Rimmer are exactly the same. The turning point in Ace's life was that he was held back to repeat a year of school and Arnold was not. Details can be found in the series 4 episode Dimension Jump.
In the episode Stoke Me a Clipper Ace confides to Rimmer that he is not the same Ace Rimmer that they first met in Dimension Jump; and that Ace Rimmer was not the first either. Ace Rimmer is not a single person. When one Ace dies, he recruits his replacement from a parallel dimension. All Ace Rimmers (in any dimension) start out as caterpillars and end up as butterflies.
