Season Four of Angel premiered on October 6, 2002. Termed as the show's "opera" season by The WB, this season saw a increasingly more serialized method of storytelling, as the events of this season transpire within a matter of weeks, the latter half of the season taking place over the period of a few days.

Much like the fourth season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, this season was plagued with sudden rewrites to compensate for issues involving the actors. The season was originally developed as being based largely around betrayal, but the theme quickly switched gears when actress Charisma Carpenter's pregnancy made her unable to perform in the role of the season's Big Bad. Instead, the writers introduced Jasmine, an ambiguous goddess that refocused the theme into issues associated with free will and the lack thereof.

The season also added long-time recurring cast member Lorne to the billed cast, as well as Angel's son, Connor.
