A Pup Named Scooby-Doo is an animated comedy that aired on ABC. It is a spinoff of The Scooby-Doo Show, featuring the characters as kids, or a pup in Scooby-Doo's case. Turning known characters into kids or babies was a trend at the time, seen in other shows such as Muppet Babies, The Flintstone Kids and Tom And Jerry Kids.

As opposed to calling themselves "Mystery Inc." (as they were unofficially billed in the first series), the kids are called "The Scooby Doo Detective Agency." The kids stumble into mysteries as before, but here we see Freddy as a tabloid-obsessed stumbler who constantly accused bully Red Herring of the crime when Red really wasn't; Daphne is a vainglorious weenybopper who summons her butler at the snap of a finger; and Velma, while still the brains of the outfit, is shy, rather quiet, and can pull a computer from her person at a moment's notice. Only Shaggy and Scooby maintain their traits, with them occasionally wafting into superhero alter egos Commander Cool and Mellow Mutt.

Show producer Scott Jeralds set about designing, writing and plotting this show like Ralph Bakshi did the year before with Mighty Mouse: The New Adventures on CBS. But where Bakshi was want to make pop culture references and needle them as well, A Pup Named Scooby Doo played it safe with outrageous face gags and the occasional fourth-wall breaking and self deprecation. It was nominated for an Emmy in 1989 (Daytime division, Outstanding Animated Program).
