WNCN is a CBS affiliate in Raleigh/Durham/Fayetteville, North Carolina (licensed to Goldsboro). The station broadcasts on digital channel 8, mapped on tuners as virtual 17 and is owned by Nexstar Media Group.
WNCN first began in 1988 as WYED as an independent station. In 1994, the station changed its call letters to the current WNCN and became a WB affiliate in January 1995 then eight months later the station joined the NBC network after former NBC affiliate WRDC channel 28 became a UPN affiliate, and WRAZ channel 50 signed on as the new WB affiliate. In 1996, NBC Universal bought the station and made it an NBC owned-and-operated station. After 10 years of being an NBC owned-and-operated station in 2006, the station was sold to Media General.
On February 29, 2016, WNCN switched to the CBS network. NBC moved to the previous CBS affiliate, WRAL/channel 5. WNCN sold its digital 17 transmissions in the spectrum incentive auction and will relocate to channel 8 in the near future. They will retain 17 as their virtual channel.
